What is the latest on Gray? I’ll never forget how he pitched down the stretch when we won the championship
I have heard he is expected to do some light throwing next week and is on a slow and steady progression. Not expected to return before the All Star break.
This is longer than I expected

Don't believe in the history of this franchise has the starting pitching been this good thru the first 48 games.
Your right it's rare to see this great SP and that's why it's so frustrating to be just 2 games over 500.
Maybe Gray can be the 8th or 9th inning guy and if so then in my opinion then we're down to getting one more bullpen piece.
Yes about the starting pitching but up until a few games ago I heard the 2012 team had a better team ERA and after 48 games had a record of 29-19.

This team should be 10 games over .500 too.

That's true but this was in reference to possibly bidding on a closer based on their past experiences. Yates coming back down to earth didn't surprise me.
They should bid on a closer and a top notch 8th inning guy. They should go after one of the top closers available in free agency in a fre months. We should have been doing that over the last three offseasons. I would have had ni problem signing Yates if they would have also signed Tanner Scott.

I heard so many say Hader was a great example of why you don't spend on a closer in the early part of 2024. Then all of that quieted down. He has probably already had more good months than Semien has had with us and he signed 2 years later. If not as much already, he will soon.

So how do you determine who's a better reliever and how do you guarantee he's gonna get the job done??? :D
The same way you do with any other player who olays at any other position. This is not that hard to understand. Late inning relievers are too important to have to hope you get lucky with one.

How should you have guaranteed Semien, Pederson or Fielder was gonna get the job done? Why is this such a difficult concept?

Talent evaluation is what separates the men from the boys.
Nobody hits 100% of time, but some GMs are definitely better than others.
Eventually talent evaluation will determine how long CY stays around.
He did win a championship, so I will always defer to that.
But this year we have that rarest commodity, great starting pitching.
And if he is strapped by budget from owners, then he has to trade prospects.
This team can go along way with their starting pitching, even with the hitting what it is.
We need a bullpen. A closer and a 8th inning guy. They ain’t cheap, but he can’t waste this opportunity with the great starting pitching.
We were not strapped by a budget when he signed Pederson. That money should have been spent on a closer. If we needed more money, then Taveras should have been traded in the offesason, and even trading Gray should have been considered. Whatever it would have taken to build up the back end of the pen.

The priorities were all out of whack because CY doesn't believe in spending on the pen.

I think he should be back by July. If I am not mistaken, him, Sborz and Bradford should all be back by July.

He overhauled the pen on the cheap.
You would help some young talent would emerge out of the minors
And yes that is the philosophy

We are not LAD or Jankees Cant but everything
Theoretically Joc should have helped a lot more
And yes we got. WS at an overpaid for Marcus

But we did utilize a surplus of SP to utilize in the playoffs. Actually that is a brilliant approach and may be utilized again this year with some minor league help

Just have to make it to the dance meaning bats have to wake up and we have to hold a lead
Easier said than done

Also maybe they overestimates the market on Leody and underestimated the extent of injury to Carter

Definitely overestimated the value of Marxusbat leadoff
Corey out so much has hurt us a lot

Also due to innings limitation
Kumar shkuld be in the pen 2nd half. I know he is getting stretched out but to me this is further injury insurance

His injury has limited his innings. Once they get Bradford back, i would imagine he goes to AAA until they need him again. They will probably limit him in AAA someshat.

I thought Jeff Wilson and John Rhadigan were wringing their hands about innings limitations too much. Injuries usually do that naturally. They were way overthinking that subject in ST and before.

And yet that's basically what you're doing when you sign a free agent reliever you're taking that chance, just like Fielder, Semien and Pederson...

And yet look how Corbin is doing so far, the team took the chance and came up smelling like a rose...

i've heard Early to mid-August for Gray and Sborz with both spending time at AA/AAA stretching

I just think this team is not listening to Bochy’s crap anymore. How can this team be this bad 2 seasons in a row.
part of it is filling the BP with basic garbage and and the other part is taking the low end of available bats and that rest solely on the shoulders of CY

when you fill your BP with Armstrong, Boushley, Garcia, Jackson, Latz, Martin, Milner and Webb, you aren't expecting top performance you're dreaming. We've got one of the best Starting Rotations in baseball and a Bullpen that is one of the worst

And the BP is money driven so you get what you get, a little bit of good, bad and mediocre...

You should direct that question to the team and see if you get an answer you like, but I'm guessing you don't because it's all about "the business" and not the feelings...
Your salary should not decide whether you are in the starting lineup.

In some cases it doesn't but for the most part it does, depends on how much is at stake and how bad the performance. They finally got rid of Leody and replaced him with someone making about 1/4 of what he was making. They're also banished Dunning and his $2.6 million and replaced him with Leiter/Corbin who are making $1.8 M combined...

I’m seeing a lot more mediocre and bad than good.

The old saying "Ya pays yer money ya takes yer chances" describes free agency to a tee, there are no Unicorns...

and all we got was mediocre. if you want to play with the big boys today you have to spend for quality. the Rangers aren't willing to play so we get BS instead of quality
