Honestly, I probably would’ve preferred that. The Darvish trade pisses me off everytime it’s brought up. I wish we were left holding the bag with nothing. Willie Calhoun acted like a spoiled brat the whole time he was here. in fairness. The kid had a point when we were sending him down to the minors while playing some guy at 2nd base who could barely hit above .100 and was racking up the golden sombreros.

JD just got too fat and happy. He coasted for 5 years, collected paychecks, while the major league team was unbelievably bad and the farm was even worse.
JD made some good trades and some not so good trades. I think Willie had talent but he sure did not like the approach our club was trying to force on him. Also we had so many marginal guys trying to break out and most did not.
In retrospect I don think he was ever suited for the OF. He was better for DH or 2B. But ultimately just not good enough.
Thinking our hitting philosophy though is changing so the 3 true outcomes are not preferred at least for all regulars

They need some OBP guys.
Cheapest way $$ wise to greatly upgrade that would be to sign Benintendi($15) and trade for Reynolds($6.7 mil)
Benintendi was #5(OF) in OBP w/ a wRC+ 122
Reynolds was #13(OF) in OBP w/ a wRC+ 125

They could still stay under the $233 mil threshold. Line up would be a lot better too imo.
I do think one new OF would help but much rather have a Reynolds than Andrew B who I fear has seen his best days. Not impressed with his NY performance even though he was out. Just an amateur impression

A slight upgrade to me is not worth it. I would rather see one of our young guys get a shot and sit either Bubba or Leody. Need more offense

Benintendi is only 28 and the shift is gone.
I believe his best days are ahead of him.
He hit .304 this year with a .373 OBP
He tried successfully to hit the ball the other way against the shift. He traded a few HRs for a lot of base hits.
With the shift gone, his age, and projected contract, I see him being one of the best values on this years FA market.
Like 4 years from now when we look back at the top 40 free agents from 22-23 we will say “man, that was a steal compared to all those other contracts”

I can’t believe the Mets have a $332 million payroll as of right now. That’s insane lol

Nobody thought that about them in 2009 though
Very rarely can anyone appreciate a team on the rise when young players are involved like that team had, and like the 2024 team should have.

Makes you wonder if MLB will eventually set forth rules about free agents and their contracts to avoid possible future issues...

Read that article on MLBT and I am not buying most of it.....lots of speculation and some almost, would have, thought about it, stuff going on there. If they were willing to and wanted the guy they should have made the offer or a reasonable one he wouldn't refuse. Looks like at the end of the day they didnt even make an offer at all. They had as much time as anyone else

Jim Bowden actually gave the Rangers an "A" when he graded all 30 teams for their offseason thus far.

Either the talent evaluators or the negotiators sucked or both. Were they the same that accepted Spencer Howard as anything worth accepting in trade cause he's just as awful.

To be honest Alexy is more useful than Howard probably but they both should be delivering newspapers in the age of electronic news
I’ve always thought the Prince Fielder trade was worse.

I wonder how much the Rangers shell out every year for carrying Disability Insurance on their higher dollar long term contract players???

I think it’s like 4 % for a position player and about 8% for a pitcher.

Assuming Texas doesn't target any of the remaining big fish SPs (Rodón, Senga, Bassitt, ect), do you guys consider a rotation of deGrom-Perez-Gray-Heaney-Odorizzi, with Dunning, Otto and Ragans as depth to be deep enough to confidently head into the season, or do y'all think at least another signing for SP depth is necessary?

If our SP keeps healthy and overperforms. And if we get middle of the order production from our LF and DH and if the pen does not blow leads especially at closer then I say yes.
Otherwise we we are a year away

Gray, Dunning and Otto need to show they can go past 5 innings.

I’ve always thought the Prince Fielder trade was worse.
I’ve always thought the Kluber trade was worse.
Trading away somebody with a cutter averaging 99+ with movement, and now last season had 42 saves out of 46 chances, 1.36 ERA is signed for 5 years for 20 million.
Brilliant. Aren’t the Rangers still looking for a closer?
