I don't think they will sign 5 guys who have to have a lot of convincing. Maybe 3 total. Any others will most likely be guys happy to have a job.

I was thinking 3 guys that don’t need to be swayed, sign them quick.
And then plan A and Plan B would be more comfortable coming here.

Money does talk though.
I guess if the Astros offered Story 5/$125 and we offered 6/$150 he would definitely take the higher amount with the extra $25 million right?
Or wrong?

From Evan Grant.

"So much for the landscape in which teams slow-played big-time free agents this winter while they waited for MLB and the Players Association to work through a new collective bargaining agreement that could include dramatic changes to free agency draft pick compensation. It may make no sense to sign a guy now under a system about to expire, but MLB teams can’t help themselves from tossing around money and tossing away draft picks. That’s how the baseball industry goes."

"The Rangers will very possibly be the next team to face this decision. The Rangers have made no secret that they want to be aggressive this winter. They are in the market for everybody, particularly the super class of free agent shortstops. On Tuesday, according to MLB sources, they hosted Trevor Story of Irving to explain their vision of the future to him. GM Chris Young has had conversations with super-agent Scott Boras, who represents Corey Seager and Marcus Semien."

That's one way. Or 5 for $140. Or add some option years.

They should just make it to where the team that offers a QO gets a draft pick after the 2nd round if they sign with another team.
But the team that signs the player does not lose a pick.

Doesn’t make sense to punish a team for spending money and bettering the team.

I guess it does make a little sense to compensate the team losing a great player they can’t quite afford to sign to a huge long term contract but are willing to spend $18.5 million on a year deal for said player.

At least the Rangers have a super high 1st round pick, and a high 3rd round pick isn’t too far off from a normal 2nd round pick I guess.
Wouldn’t care too much about the 2nd round pick this particular year as long as the player we sign is for 4+ years.

This is an interesting read about what to expect when Rockies players move on to play somewhere else. It basically acknowledges that their new at home stats will not be as good, but also shows their road stats will improve.

Yes I saw this. One thing I saw first hand was how Story performed at our ballpark. He looked really good. The best guy minus Beltre on the field.

The crack of his bat was strong. I always listen to this

Let's get Trevor Story signed today.
I hope so. I do think Seager and Correa are better players but my gut tells me Story is the right fit and as mentioned we want to leave room to extend the right players.

I am not ready to write off IKF but he is a good fill in and might be a real good defensive replacement in a couple of years. It sort of keeps our powder dry

I really hope we sign Trevor Story.
He hit so many hard hit balls last year. Just hit them in the wrong spot at the wrong park.
He should only avg 3-5 HRs missing that were expected. He had 18 this year!
He could very well hit .275/.350/.525 with 35-40 HRS

It'd be great to have him signed today. But I still feel like everyone is waiting for Correa to sign so they can adjust their asks accordingly. Plus, there are musings that NYY and LAD could get into a bidding war for Seager (although there's also a reasonable argument to be made why LAD wouldn't be in on him).

Seems like the Rangers are making a strong effort though.

There was a comment on Reddit where someone asked why Story would want to go "from one last place franchise to another." Someone else commented that if a team does literally anything to improve, they are already doing more than the Rockies are. I'd like to think Story was shown the plan of what we have on the horizon and liked what he saw.

I just don’t think there is anyways with Turner the LAD are going after Seager. Detroit is likely still in the mix maybe even Phillies for top 2

Yes I do hope and think a buy in to a new Ranger vision is imperative.
As fan we need that as well
