Unless they are looking at filling up some areas below AAA I am not sure the reason for needing a catcher.
That was my question. Why do we need a catcher? Beats me. Pitching is always a little concern. But does the question deal with 2021 or beyond. If we are not trying to win in 2021 then Elvis can still play SS and IKF can play 3rd. If that is not the case I'm at a loss for 3rd.

Seems like they have 3 catchers on 40 man. 4 would be unusual

I would assume it would be a catcher or 2 on minor league deals since they already have 4 on the 40 man. Or they could release Aramis Garcia if they picked up a major leaguer. Wouldn’t mind seeing Garcia and Trevino split time to start the year with Huff down at AA then either wait for the injury or the underperformance and then call Huff up mid season.. if they’re both performing well then maybe Huff ends up moving up and we trade Garcia or Trevino or something. Or move Huff to 1B if Lowe is the one underperforming.

I think it is important when discussing and or asking questions that we make clear what year we are referring to.

What do you all think about Eli White and Adolis Garcia?

If Lowe is indeed our staring 1b then I see no reason to bring in another catcher. 3B depends if ikf starts at SS and I assume he will. If so, we either bring up Jung or a FA. Rather leave Jung down in AAA. Pitching is always a need.

Will the Rangers most likely carry 12 or 13 pitchers?
How are Andrus and Odor going to both stay on as back ups? Does one win the 3B spot? Is Guzman out? Can odor or Andrus play 1B?
we still have to have an extra outfielder or 2 and a back up catcher.
The bullpen also has like 9 guys. 2 too many.
i feel like there’s still a trade or 2 in the near future.

Maybe a 3 team trade. Mets, Rangers and Rockies.
Rangers get Dominic Smith and JD Davis
Mets get Arrenado, Odor (cano suspended) and Taylor Hearn
Rockies get Calhoun, Jonathan Hernandez, Davis Wendzel, Ronny Henriquez and one prospect from the Mets.

Domonic Smith seems like he would be a legit DH. JD Davis can play 3B this year and then switch to 1b or Lf if needed later.
We would be rid of odor as well.

“The Rangers have been one of the offseason’s busiest teams to date, and GM Chris Young told reporters (including the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Jeff Wilson) that the club still has more items on its shopping list. The Rangers are looking to add starting pitching, catching, and third base help”

who do y’all think they will pick up for SP, C and 3B?
I doubt it would be anyone of significance, just someone who will come here on a one year deal.

To me, it is 2 years too early to consider giving up young talent like Henriquez and Wendzel. By the time 2023 rolls around we should be able to fill a couple holes in the lineup with really good or great free agents. We are not going anywhere before then anyway. If we have excess young talent at that point we can use them to trade for a high quality pitcher.

I totally get that. But if odor and his salary is gone and the lineup all of sudden looks like

C-Trevino/Huff
1B-Lowe/D Smith
2B-Solak
3B-JD Davis
SS-IKF
LF-Dahl
CF-Taveras
RF-Gallo
DH-Smith
With Andrus in the mix as well.

They could go after a decent SP and have a good team next year.
they might have to do a little trial by error with the SP staff the first couple of months but it could fall into place. They can be competitive next year and still be waiting for the prospects to hit.

Agree. That is exactly why I posted we should identify what yr we are talking about. A trade today is not always applicable till later.

No link. Just a thought. In the post before that I’m trying to understand how everyone is going to fit on this roster the way it is currently structured

You are wanting a decent team next year that comes at the expense of future years though. They are rebuilding. Trying to have a decent team the last few years before these last couple has pushed our progress back enough. That is how I feel any way.

To early for me. Catcher and SS is all I see as a solid guess. Lowe may be our 1B or trade material. Just don't know.

Makes sense
Dom Smith and JD Davis are still under team control for 3 more years though. And the trade would get rid of odor. And the trade isn’t really giving up the farm...
Also at that point the team would be a little more solidified at which point they could go get one more good corner outfielder/DH guy and a SP.
I think there can be a fine balance of winning today and tomorrow.

I imagine they are looking for a cheap backup for Trevino.
It slipped past me but they already have the guy Aramis Garcia from the Giants. He is rostered along wiDavid Garcia
