Makes sense
Dom Smith and JD Davis are still under team control for 3 more years though. And the trade would get rid of odor. And the trade isn’t really giving up the farm...
Also at that point the team would be a little more solidified at which point they could go get one more good corner outfielder/DH guy and a SP.
I think there can be a fine balance of winning today and tomorrow.
In 2 years we can go after free agents instead of trading for help now. By then we will have more of a read on what we really need.

So my guess is Elvis will not be the 3B at least not a full year. If Elvis starts opening day then i am guessing Jung is coming up by the break or sooner. But likely we are in the market for 3B for one year. Maybe we can flip him.

Other thought is who is our #5 pitcher? We have Gibson, Lyles, Cody and Dunning set. Probably Allard or Benjamin but we will need more depth than this

I used to describe that balanced approach as being in the middle of the road where things get ran over.

I don't know that they are putting Cody in the rotation at the beginning of the year.

Ok Just my thought. It is his spot to lose. We shall wait and see if they announce at some point prior to spring training

It slipped past me but they already have the guy Aramis Garcia from the Giants. He is rostered along wiDavid Garcia
I think he is here just in case nothing else works out.

Ha ...but I seriously don't see the Rangers aiming high this offseason in their additions. They are in a rebuild....remember? All they really need is a placeholder anyways. Their future is fine at catcher but ok if they can upgrade with minimal cost ..sure why not..doubt it is any huge priority regardless

I think Dom Smith and JD Davis would be great additions at 3B and DH that would allow flexibility and not clog up spots our prospects need. Most prospects don’t pan out and if the guy “blocking” them is performing really well they’re really not “blocking” them. Just trade the blocker or the blocked for things you really need

If Lowe and Dahl don’t work out you could always move Smith to 1B and Davis to LF and call up Jung to play 3B and have Huff DH the 2nd half.
I would add another SP or 2 as well.. every year it seems we need 8-10 SP to finish a season.

I just don’t like the idea of waiting for our prospects. I’m all for guys like Jung Taveras and Huff but that’s about it at the moment.
If you type in any year followed by Rangers top 20 prospects you will see the majority of the time they never amounted to anything.
I think Huff, Taveras and Jung will though and those are the only 3 position players I would try not to block.

I am looking down the road to 2023 In all this mix. We have to consider players with heavy bats. Right now Huff and Gallo is all I see and Gallo has fallen from grace and Sam is not a guarantee. Looking two years away is difficult to determine who and what we need until trading settles down and the dust clears.Suspect to see more dealing and consideration for RBI producers and not just FA to field a position. Really believe we can get there but our GM has lots of mid-night oil to burn.

You are wanting a decent team next year that comes at the expense of future years though. They are rebuilding. Trying to have a decent team the last few years before these last couple has pushed our progress back enough. That is how I feel any way.
My thoughts as well. I do not mind restocking the minors for the future in many of the trades we have made but to take away time from young talent that we already have played this past season would be a problem to me. We straddled the fence long enough on what we are doing and it took a disaster of a season to finally pull the trigger and play some young guys. And for the most part they held up pretty well.

I am not worried about blocking someone with Smith and Davis. I am more concerned with trading away Henriquez especially, and Wendzel also. When the time comes, in a year or two, we can do better than Smith and Davis either via free agency or trade.

But, hey, nothing says your goals for the direction of the team has to agree with mine.

Actually we disagree on Taveras also. I am not nearly as sold on him as you seem to be.

Maybe a 3 team trade. Mets, Rangers and Rockies.
Rangers get Dominic Smith and JD Davis
Mets get Arrenado, Odor (cano suspended) and Taylor Hearn
Rockies get Calhoun, Jonathan Hernandez, Davis Wendzel, Ronny Henriquez and one prospect from the Mets.

Domonic Smith seems like he would be a legit DH. JD Davis can play 3B this year and then switch to 1b or Lf if needed later.
We would be rid of odor as well.
we give away too much in prospects (Hearn, Hernandez, Wendzel & Henriquez) for too little a return. if we trade Odor why not package him with Gallo, Lyles + some cash to someone like the Yankees for a package of Cessa RHP, German RHP, Deivi Garcia RHP, Estevan Florial OF, Miguel Yajure RHP & Miguel Andujar 3B/OF while we're dreaming

“Rangers slugger Joey Gallo has been “available” since last summer’s trade deadline, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic writes“

Wonder if they will end up trading him this off-season or wait for him to rebound in the first half
