Parts I liked:
Santana CF
Add a quality pitcher
Don't be afraid to trade a pitcher if return is good
Mazara to 1B and Gallo to CF
Meritocracy

Funny that it has been mentioned on board Santana CF and Mazara 1B. Think Guzman has options

I think it’s telling that grant was pitching both Choo and Mazara at first base. It just shows you how much better Guzman’s bat needs to be. You gotta have someone who can hit over there no matter how good the defense is.

Knee jerking. Give Guzman another year and you don't seem to think we ever need defense at much of any position. Offense seems to be your main criteria. Ozzie Smith who hit .262 with 28 HRs in 19 years but made the All Stars 15 times would have been sent packing by you in the beginning. In his first 7 years his best Avg was .258. Now if Guzman still can't figure it out I can understand. But for now he has 2 partial seasons.

He has a AAA option though and a lot of competition for ABs.
Someone will have to get less

I wish it was Choo. He is not a part of a future. But his salary will not allow it to happen.

Different era and much different position though. I don't have a problem with giving him more time, but if they decided to go in a different direction I would understand that too.

are we going to make the same mistake with Guzman that we have made with odor? And Mazara?

this particular international crop, or group if you will has been disappointing to say the least. I wish we could flush these guys and start over.

for example, Juan Soto is 21 years old and he’s already produced a higher WAR or better stats than Mazara and odor COMBINED, in much less time and AB’s.

If we don't give them extensions, then we can't make the same mistake with them as we did with Odor.

That's a pretty serious underestimation of both of those guys, while I wouldn't say either of them are true aces, they're certainly capable of leading a solid rotation
a solid rotation maybe but we don't have one. after Minor and Lynn and maybe Allard who else do we have?

I accept they're better at the plate but neither has any experience at 1st. putting one of them there just weakens an already porous defense.

We have made mistakes both ways. You are looking at it from one way. Why don't you list the guys we didn't give a chance and let them go too soon and ended up being quality players. Again, you are knee jerking. I have no desire to have Choo or Mazara play 1B. If we have a legitimate defender who can play that position and hit then I am all in just like I am once Solak came along and could play 2B. But until he did I saw no reason to just throw anybody out there. So let Guzman have the chance to prove himself. You would have shipped Nelson Cruz off after 2 years based upon your observations.

GM meetings today so the beginnings of dialogue. We have to be in trade talks due to surplus of LHB and some money to spend. Have to think BoSox are a potential trade partner. They could use a 2B and need to unload some expensive pitching and Betts and Jackie Bradley. Betts came down to earth a bit from 2018 and expensive.
Food for thought.

He is one really good player. He was still an All Star, awarded another Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award winner. Only thing he wasn't was the MVP like the year before. And he is only 27. Would love to have the guy but we would have to get rid of some baggage for that to happen.

Have to play chess sometimes with these FAs. This is why an overpay for Josh D is unwarranted

David Price LHP 3 years $96000000 2020: $32000000
Mookie Betts RF 1 year $27700000
Nathan Eovaldi RHP 3 years $51000000 2020: $17000000
Jackie Bradley CF 1 year $11000000

which ones would you take?

He has played some CF but would have to get an extension in a negotiation window or not interested

Maybe Betts with an extension but in my mind I am thinking of Odor being in the trade. Once thought of Choo until JDM opted in. Tough take on Betts- did he have an outlier year 2018 or is he really a legit top 5 player?
Probably a pitcher on this team is more realistic.
In reality we need a pitcher and 3B. Sometimes I don't deal in reality

I can agree with that. Of course there is the usual if we are playing 500 ball then trade him at the deadline posts. He would be a prize for a contending team.

I think he had an outlier year in 2017 with his average. In 5 full seasons he has been in the All Stars 4 times, Gold Glove 4 times, Silver Slugger twice and 1st, 2nd and 6th in MVP voting. The guy is a 5 tool player.

Depends on the deal, but I still like the deal proposed in the media last week, as long as we get help with Price's salary in 2021 and 2022.

If ranking 7th in WAR for position players in MLB is a down year... then he's pretty damn good
