And how long will it take and what is right way? Do we even have anyone close to panning out as an ace who isn't 2 or 3 plus years away? I see pitchers who can or will be ready to fill the lower 2 or 3 spots in the rotation during the next couple of years but beyond that I am not convinced we have an ace who will come out of our league system before 2020 or 2021
It will take a while that is for sure.

You may be right sir. His OPS I think is the best on team minus Choo but unless he changes his mindset he is not a favored option up with a man on 3rd less than two outs.

I can handle a guy or two like this on team but we need a team that has contact hitters as a whole.

The difference between Gallo and JD Martinez is huge down 2 strikes
Gallo made significant strides as the year went along. Coincidently, that was about the time Choo's performance went in the toilet.

.250/.333/.599/.932 for Gallo over the last 2 months. If his OPS is going to be significantly north of .900 I don't care what he does with 2 strikes.

Now, let's see if he can continue that upward trend next season.

J D Martinez really came into his own the season after he turned 26. That season for Gallo would be 2020. No, I am not predicting Joey will match him in production, but I am saying it can take awhile to come into your own in this league.

When do we find out if Hamels option is picked up or not? Is that Wednesday also or is that just a deadline for players to declare?

Edit: I found out here.

All MLB players with 2019 contract options

All decisions must be made by Friday at 5 p.m. ET

  • Oct. 29: Commencement of a five-day, exclusive negotiation window that teams have with their own free agents
  • Oct. 31: Deadline for players with opt-out clauses (most notably, Clayton Kershaw) to exercise those provisions.
  • Nov. 3: The deadline for MLB clubs to formally issue one-year qualifying offers (valued at $17.9MM this offseason) to free agents is 5:00pm ET. Those players will have 10 days to weigh the offers and can negotiate with other clubs during that 10-day window. After that 5pm deadline, all free agents are eligible to begin negotiating with other teams.
  • Nov. 6-8: General Managers’ meetings in Carlsbad, CA
  • Nov. 13: Deadline for players to accept or reject qualifying offers.
  • Nov. 20: Deadline for teams to set their 40-man rosters in advance of the Rule 5 Draft.
  • Nov. 30: Deadline to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players.
  • Dec. 9-13: Winter Meetings in Las Vegas.
  • Dec. 13: Rule 5 draft takes place on the final day of the Winter Meetings.
  • Jan. 11: Arbitration exchange day — the date on which teams and players must exchange filing numbers for arbitration. Hearings, if necessary, typically begin in early February.
  • March 28, 2019: Opening Day! Baseball is back.

He was pretty good in 2017, with .303 BA 45 HRS and over 100 RBI's with 2 teams.

I was talking about what he did 3 years prior to that in 2014. That was the year after he turned 26.

Re Gallo and Cora statements. The whole point is JDM has a different approach at the plate with 2 strikes which make him effective with men on base. When Evsn G posts this Gsllo responds woth a shrug that comes across that he is what he is.

Perhaps he will come out and say I would really like to cut down on strikeouts but until the time won't change a thing minue pitch recognition IMO

Granted JDM first 3 years was pretty ordinary until he went to Detroit nut he never had as big of strikeout problem as Gallo.

Just wish he could facilitate change in this area. Would be difference in being a really good player and a MVP caliber player

You're right if we do nothing but wait for them to develop
It can either take a few years if done right or it can never happen if done wrong.

Right now they have a lot of problems offensively on the club. Choo, Odor, and DeShields all finished very badly. At least Gallo finished strong so maybe he has turned a corner. Maybe. We still don't know if Mazara will put it all together, but I still have hope. We also don't know if Guzman will have enough offense for 1B, but it is certainly too early to assume he won't. In order to get where we want to be we will have to upgrade in at least three of those spots and maybe more. Between developing our younger position players and acquiring free agents our organization has its work cut out for it.

Also, at some point we may need another SS and C.

He did the same thing in 2017 and everyone thought he had turned the corner. And he sucked the the first half of 2018. Until he changes I'm up there to do damage and change the scoreboard attitude, nothing will change with him. And how are you doing that hitting .206. Of course you always wait till the last two months of the season to play him.

That is why I emphasized the word "maybe."

He may never get better, but it wouldn't be unusual at all for a MLB player to improve his game significantly around the 25 to 26 year-old age range. That is why I brought up JD Martinez's age when he improved significantly. Whether it is caused by physical maturity, mental maturity, emotional maturity, or simply experience, it isn't that unusual to expect and see improvement.

It will take a while that is for sure.
With the right approach to blending FA's & our best prospects it could be as early as 2021 but if our approach is to rely solely on our prospects we could be talking 2024 or 2025 or later.
