Special Teams Fail

What I noted. I haven't watched the DVR'd replay yet.

Gave up a 100 yd kick-off return for TD
Penalty for kick-off out of bounds. Ball went out at the 20-30 yd line
2 missed field goals first half
Shanked punt 3rd quarter

Sorry if I missed anything, but these special teams lose close games.

I think something happened to Maher in the first half, an AA kicker doesn't have "off" days.
The rest of it needs a bunch of work.

The 100 yard kickoff return was what pissed me off most. We've given up so many fucking long returns since Pelini has been here it seems like, it's getting old.

Maher had an off day. He wasn't there mentally, and it was obvious. Most of our Special Teams woes were on his shoulders, and I'm sure he knows that. I don't expect that to continue. He was Big 10 kicker of the year last year, and a great punter to boot.

Moving forward, I'd like to see better kick off coverage, but there is no doubt in my mind we will be better in the kicking game. I have no concerns there.

One more thing...........

Maher should be able to boot that cocksucker out of the endzone 4 out of 5 times............yet the coaching staff (obviously) had him pooch kick a couple times, especially the one that went out at the 25 yard line. WTF is up with that?

Just kick the sumbitch as far as you can, if it goes out of the endzone, good deal. 25 yards is not a big deal.

If Burkhead makes it back and allows Abdullah to continue returning kicks, he'll take a couple to the house.

If Burkhead's injury is nagging, It would be foolish to risk Abdullah to injury on a kick return.

The fact that it's only an MCL sprain, and minor at that, is very fortunate for us.

I thought the announcer was saying ACL at first, and I started having thoughts of medical redshirt for Rex to be honest.

An MCL sprain is about as good as we could have hoped for in that situation.

Given he's healthy, come 2013 Abdullah is gonna make everyone forget about Rex anyway.

on the kick returned for a TD, i felt like it was the fact that he tried to drop it at about the 1 yard line that caused the poor coverage. he didn't kick it far enough or high enough for our coverage to get in position with only a 5 yard run at it.

I think the question now becomes "was Maher high that day?"

His first field goal he hit the turf about 8 inches before the ball.......

The kick that he put out of bounds at the 25 yard line looked exactly the same way.

The punt was one of his worst that he's ever had.........it seemed almost like his hand-eye coordination was off or something. I think he smoked up a bunch of weed before the game

There are teams that will beat us on our shhhedule if he performs like that. Field position is extremely important when ye get into conference play.

Maher's leg alone could have taken 7 points off the board for Southern Miss, and could have put 6 more on the board for Nebraska.......

And it's not like that's a big IF either........that could have and should have easily been the case.

It is nice to know though that our Offense can perform well enough to blow a decent opponent out of the water even when our Special Teams unit is on crack cocaine........and our Defensive unit has no idea what's going on....

Now, I know Southern Miss isn't Michigan State en sech.........I'm just saying
