Here's an interesting nugget from back in those days.

For a decade, from 1981 through 1990, the NFC, and really the SB, was about the Niners, Giants, Bears, and Redskins.
--No other NFC team made the SB in that period
--Those 4 teams won every SB but 1 (1983 season, Raiders over Skins).
--Those 4 teams only losses in the NFC Championship Game were to each other

The Niners won 4 SBs, lost 2 NFCCG (83 Skins, 90 Giants)
The Skins won 2 SBs, lost 1 SB, lost 1 NFCCG (86 Giants)
The Giants won 2 SBs, 0 NFCCG losses
The Bears won 1 SB, lost 2 NFCCG (84 and 88, Niners)
Niners could easily have had 6 or 7; they were that good and that unlucky.

Ahhh, i didn't notice that........

Because it didn't happen. Look at the video from the rear where he fumbles. The handoff looks like a perfect waist-high handoff right in his gut

Ya I was going from memory, it’s off to the side a bit. But no doubt Roger should of wrapped it up.

hmm. Looked perfect to me.
I watched it yesterday a few times, it’s on the side a little, you can see the ball on the side immediately, but Roger should of handled it. I forgot that was Craig’s last play of his career.

Of his 49er career, yes, but not his career. He played for the Raiders. As for the handoff, at least we agree that he should have handled it.

I agree. We had some great teams that fell short.

The 1983 49ers
-Niners finished 4th in points scored and 4th in points allowed.
-Montana had a great PB season. Dean and Board had 17.5 and 13 sacks, 3 defenders in the PB.
-Only went 10-6, but 2 losses were by 3pts and 2 others were by 5pts.
-Lost to Washington (NFCCG), 24-21 due to 2 completely BS 4th quarter dpi calls that gave the Skins the win

The 1987 49ers - OL and defense
-Niners finished 1st in points scored and yards gained. 3rd in points allowed, 1st in yards allowed
-Montana, Craig, and Rice and 2 defenders in the PB. 13-2 record.
-We lost in the first rd to Minny 36-24, after digging a 20-3 hole at halftime
-The D couldn't cover WR Anthony Carter, who caught 10 passes for 227yds!
-The Vikings got 4 sacks and lots of pressure, Montana going 12 of 26 for 109yds, 0TDs and a pick-6
-Young in for Montana. 12 of 17 for 158yds, 1TD pass, 1 INT, 6 rushes for 72yds and 1 TD
-too little, too late. Didn't score an offensive TD until half way through the 3rd quarter

The 1990 49ers - Craig Fumble, Montana injury
I refuse to relive it.

Ha ha! I hear you. It was devastating but at least it was a loss that was determined by the players on the field. 83 was so heart breaking because the refs determined the outcome.
There was a year in the early 90s where Young missed most of the season and I think they were 4 and 6 at one time. They won six in a row to close the season including a wipeout of the Bears in the season finale. They finished 10 and 6 and missed the playoffs but they were the best team in the league at the end of the regular season.
