I'd like to see how the average NBA fan liked having his or hers' salary held up for public scrutiny and dissection. "I'm afraid we can't give you that raise Joe. That extra 30 lbs. your carrying around reduces your productivity and means the companies' insurance premium may go up.

Not to mention those hangovers you come in with every Monday morning after watching NBA TV and swilling Bud and Jagermeister all weekend." If you don't like the coin Kobe's pulling down while the guy mopping his sweat off the floor is making minimum wage, just remember, it's Capitalism baby.

WAH!!!! pay me 48.5 million and you can discuss it all you freaking want. you can broadcast the debate over how overpaid i am on every tv channel all day. like kobe, i wouldnt give a damn. kobe had a decision to make.. go after ring number 6.. or get 50 million. he took the route i would have. 50 million thanks. id rather have 5 rings and 50 million than 6 rings and 20 million. kobe is alot of things.. but stupid is not one of them.

Where did you form the opinion that I don't like what he is making?

I wish they would have given him 30M a year again. That would only further ensure that one less team can ever be in the discussion to build a roster better then Miami.

As I pointed out earlier, Kobe is the one who said WINNING ring #6 was THE most important thing.
IF it was, then he would want to be surrounded by as many good players as he can for the next 2 years.
HIS decision no way allows that to happen now.
IF I were him, I would have also taken the money.

Not taking it guarantees him nothing and he is smart to bankroll as much as he can because based on past history, one day he will be handing half of it over to an ex wife.

and in 15-16 they only have the Big 3 and Cole. Bosh and LBJ will still be in
their prime. That right there makes them contenders

You make the assumption that Lebron will simply stay on the HEAT and keep his low contract.

First off, if Lebron James is still on the HEAT it will be for a longer contract in the neighborhood of 30 million for 5 years to about 2019.

He is going to opt out. He might resign with the HEAT, but there is no circumstance where he takes 40 million instead of 150 million???

The NBA players union would not let him do it even if he wanted to do it.

The alternative is a 32 year old Bosh and 34 year old Wade with nobody else fighting for a 7th seed if Lebron takes his talents elsewhere.

The future is grim for the HEAT.

That is the price you pay when you mortgage the future for titles.

It worked out. Getting NBA titles in the present is priceless.
I would settle for that 100 times out of 100.

But, lets not pretend they have the present and the future.

Horns, I have to disagree with you on the Heat. While they did mortgage the future, that debt is now paid in full. They are owed a round 1 and they owe a round 1. Basically, they have their draft investments in place.

Adding to this, they got three players to take a financial deal that was unprecedented. That compromise allowed Miami to have the big three and draw other vets.

While I do agree that Wade is on his last legs, there is every reason to believe a new piece will be added in FA, as they resign Bosh/Wade. Assuming they get those guys at the same level, then there is every chance that the Heat remain prominent through 2018/2019 ish.

Pat Riley did it right. Unlike the Lakers, he did not mortgage the future, nor overpay for a veteran. He has the Heat well set up to take advantage and have the cash to go to battle in 2016. The guy is smart

The extension sets him up for a plush retirement/investment prospects...endorsements and apparel sales will supplement his stash. The Lakers take care of their own....Celtics said buh bye to their lone championship duo of KG/PP and their coach....

True that Bam. When Doc decided he wanted to be. clipper, amazingly, pierce and kg understood and accepted/agreed to the deal. It was almost Tom Brady esque. They put the team first, not their own pocket book.

A good example of team vs self focus and probably why Dwight wanted out

By the way Bam, i see in your lakers team forum site most posters did not want the lakers to pay more than 18 mil for Kobe . Those same posters on the main board spin it as "yeah but lakers take care of their own.

Too funny

No way could Kobe afford investments with out it, I mean he does get his salary advanced.

Without this extension, Kobe will still have made well over 250 million dollars in career earnings. That's just counting the contracts he's signed over the years.

Pretty sure he was going to have a plush retirement and investment prospects regardless.

But, lets not pretend they have the present and the future.

1st, Nobody said they "have" the present and future. I was more just offering optimistic situations where their future looks pretty good.

LBJ has made it pretty clear that he is willing to take less money for a chance at rings and he has also stated that Rings are his number 1 concern and unlike some other players he backs that up.

And LBJ may surprise you, he made $42m last year from endorsements. Compared to CP3, Griffin, Durant and Rose his commercials were barely played. Winning rings increases that more than what that extra $10-$15m more per year his NBA contract would.

LeBron James - Forbes

I agree there is a strong chance that LBJ opts out to both shop the league and maybe restructure his Miami contract. He is not going to opt out to extort a max contract from Miami.

Please provide a source stating that the players union has a say in an individual's contract? If so that is fucked up like Stern.

Major point, you are talking like LBJs contract is still on the books if he takes his talents else where. That is $20m and a max contract offer to somebody else and they probably receive draft picks in a sign and trade for his Bird rights.

The assumptions you make about LBJ wanting money like Kobe is funny, they all took way less money to chase rings at a time when the CBA was nothing like what it is now. Had the current CBA been in place they probably would have taken even less. That is why I think there is a strong possibility that they restructure their deals, especially Wade as he is nearing his twilight years. Bosh is less likely I think. Bosh could opt out and instant get Max contract deals, he deserves one so much more than several players with them.
