Per a source close to Shawn Thornton, he's officially filed a written appeal of the 15 game suspension by the NHL. #BruinsTalk

I really don't see what would cause Bettman to change this decision. Also mentioned that if he doesn't win with Bettman, he can go to a neutral discipline arbitrator.

WOW.....by Shawn appealing he's truly, TRULY showing how sorry he really is.

Heard that no appeal has ever gone on to the neutral arbitrator. You really think Bettman wants that to happen??

Bloody Fucking Hell.

Thorton needs to "sack up". What he did was wrong and he is trying to duck behind some stupid meaningless Law. Bettman should extended his suspenion bc obiouvsly(sp) he doesn't get what he did was wrong

:gaah:

Thornton has the right to appeal, so I don't fault him for pursuing it. However, it does bring about criticism, however warranted or not. That said, I don't see him getting anything out of it. Bettman would be on thin ice if he gave back any of the games, so I see him doing nothing and Thornton going to the neutral arbitrator.

Then I can see the neutral arbitrator going to the district attorney.

The process will begin with a hearing with commissioner Gary Bettman, who will have the opportunity to shorten, lengthen or maintain the 15-game suspension levied by the NHL's Department of Player Safety. If Bettman keeps Thornton's suspension at six games or more then he will have the option of a hearing with an independent arbitrator who would determine whether the punishment was appropriate. Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta appealed a 10-game suspension earlier this year, which commissioner Bettman upheld. Kaleta opted not to stand before an independent arbitrator.

Under terms of the new collective agreement, players were granted the right to appeal any suspension of six games or longer – first, to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and, if that wasn’t successful, to an independent arbitrator.

Ok I went out and looked the appeal process is the decision of the player but I have a strange feeling the NHLPA is pushing Thorton to appeal this to see if what was agreed upon in the CBA holds true and how much power the players truly have in the process to past Bettman.

I know Kaleta tried and didn't go the third party but I have a feeling the NHLPA honestly thinks this appeal will have more traction. I have a funny feeling this one is more a political battle between the NHL and NHLPA than Thorton truly wanting to appeal.

You sir ruined my post, I was going to suggest the same. He should thank his lucky stars and STFU and take it like a man. He said he was wrong for christ sakes, does he really think after an admission of guilt they will lower the suspension? :L

Of course, if the district attorney is either Chris Darden or Marcia Clark, Thornton could skate by with time served.

Would need to be Marcia Clark dash, Chris Darden quit (as he said he would) if OJ was acquitted. I always admired him for sticking to his guns.

wouldn't it be fun if bettman extended the suspension?

doubt it would happen because then he'd be undermining his underlings which is a no-no, but that would be fun.
