Secretary of State Rex Tillerson introduced Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the Washington visit.

"I want to welcome foreign minister Lavrov to the state department and express my appreciation for him making the trip to Washington so that we can continue our dialogue and our exchange of views that began in Moscow," Tillerson said.

A reporter asked whether the firing of Comey "cast a shadow" over the talks.

The White House is reportedly stunned at the Russian government for publishing photos of the Oval Office meeting between President Trump, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and ambassador Sergey Kislyak.


An unnamed official was said to have told CNN’s Jim Acosta that Moscow “tricked” the Trump administration, after photos of the meeting were released through Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.


They added that the White House did not anticipate the pictures would be made public. No US media were allowed in the meeting.


The official also reportedly hit back at critics of the presence of Ambassador Kislyak — who was a central figure in the controversy surrounding former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s contacts with Moscow — in the Oval Office, saying: “It is ridiculous to say that an ambassador can’t meet with the president.”
