That's a myopic way at looking at things that reduces Shanahan to nothing more than a play caller. The Niners also have had one of the best defenses in football the last few years. Is that because of Shanahan's offensive play calling?
Niners defense is all about the front office making really good personnel moves. The offense too, but shanahan is clearly one of the best offensive minds in the league i dont think thats up for debate

But you are engaging in a chicken or egg fallacy here.

Shanahan is a very offensive mind. He still needs talent to win, just like every other team. And great offensive minds with weak defenses, don't go very far.

To be clear, my point is not that we need to take a defensive coach. My point is that play calling is not that important relatively to the other things you need from a coach.

A coach getting their players to execute matters far more.

Wow, good for him though thats very respectable.

Now its a race for McDonald with quinn as the consolation prize?
Maybe but the Seahawks have a habit of shocking their fan base so brace yourself.

Either way, im prepared for a lack of excitement
I think Slowik would be exciting, heck of a lot more risky then Johnson though.

Not as much excitement, and very risky. Quinn will be very meh, graham-evero-Glenn etc would be a kick in the nuts.

MacDonald should be the guy at this point

Good DC but what happens to the offense here? Teams been filling their staff positions left and right and the market for offensive minded types have been gutted.

Not a big sample to judge from but, he was passing coordinator for the 49ers the 2 years prior and he's coached defense as well, which is a bit unusual.

I think any of the people that had 2nd interviews are serious candidates.

My hope is that most of those interviews were intended to identify possible assistant HC/OC or DC hires, not legitimate head coach hires.

Because mike Kafka as head coach would be extremely questionable

He's only marginally riskier than Bobby Slowik or Ben Johnson, if at all.

Who do you even want at this point?
