He was very effective in New Orleans offensive scheme but he never was much of a blocker. There are very few great blocking TE's in the NFL.

Even in NO he could be taken away. I believe NE held him to 0 catches. Everyone agrees he can't block making him one of the most over rated TEs in the league.
There are plenty of excellent blocking TEs it's not glamorous and doesn't make the stat sheet so you just don't hear about them. Now dual threats like Gronk are virtually impossible to come by.

Could be used as a piece to trade up in the 1st to grab a QB if the Pats are inclined to do so.

My guess is BB is moving a direction of starting to purge some of the older guys and guys who are unhappy with the Patriot's way.

The roster is in need of an injection of young talent and guys who haven't been around long enough to grumble about how BB does things.
