Time to put this in the past. Makes the league look bad if you ask me.

Yes, one of the supposed best players in the league being a cheater def makes the league look bad.

Just look at MLB.

All of them. What are you missing? If the NFL made $1,000,000,000. Last year. Then they decided to throw $40,000,000 at a frvivolous law suit. They lost $40,000,000 collectively. I'm just throwing numbers out, the actual numbers don't matter until it really starts to hurt. Like a strike.

I could be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure a lawsuit on the league's behalf comes out of the member dues paid by each team to the NFL. It definitely operated that way when the league was still a non-profit.

I was with you up to this point, but you're conveniently forgetting that these owners were all mega-wealthy before they became a member of the club.

What's that got to do with how happy they are with their ROI in their NFL investment? If their ROI is % points higher than any of their other conventional businesses, why are they going to rock the boat?

Plus, goodell just destroyed the union in the last round of the CBA.

Just took them to the cleaners.

I didn't even jump in to argue the larger point. Just took exception to the idea that NFL owners are 'losing' money.

I made no claims on either of those two points, I just pointed out that these guys are all incredibly wealthy and your statement about how much money they make with their teams re: "FAAAAAR beyond what they could make in conventional businesses or investments." is false.

In terms of a passive investment?

Unless they're investing in the next google or FB, it's probably not even close.

This guy doesn't seem to get that business expenses doesn't mean losing money.

They are spending money, sure.

But you have legal fees ticketed into your budget. You know you're gonna have some appeals by shameless cheaters (such as brady) so you have money set aside for that ahead of time.

What passive investments can get them the huge levels of ROI these guys have gotten by owning these teams (and likely not even buying it with their own money).

Owning an NFL team is a passive investment now?

You do realize that these guys are all billionaires, right? You also realize that they make a shit ton of money every day from investments and business income. Maybe you also realize that the cost of running a competent NFL organization from top to bottom is staggering and the yearly profit is not staggering. The return for them is when they sell the team since in the last 30 years the value of these franchises has risen sharply.

My point is that these football teams are toys for this particular group of men, not primary sources of income.

Ah, got you. It isn't false as a % though.

Yes, Paul Allen isn't going to make more money off the Hawks than he does Microsoft stock, but his ROI is higher in the NFL.

Now if there are NFL owners who have stakes in Central American drug cartels, I'd be prepared to revise my statement - but overall the NFL owners are happy as fvck with their earnings on the NFL.

Legal expenses in the past (when the league was a non profit) have always been covered by the member dues each team pays each year (roughly $300 million in total).

And due to the TV contracts, that trend isn't changing. Which is why they're happy as fvck. Even their best regular businesses have down cycles. Not the NFL baby.

Anybody else see that the official NFL Twitter account was hacked and announced that Goodell was dead?

Not making as much money as you otherwise would is a form of losing money.

No

For the record I don't wish death on R. Goodell. Maimed and horribly disfigured would be good enough for me.

that would be a fitting event for Brady as well.

Maybe they can do it together.
