Nix - if I understand this situation at all - is the one who truly got boned.

Aiken may benefit from the Astros screw-up; especially in the long run.

And the Astro's have taken a shit in their own pocket, and for a lousy 1.5 mil when it's all said-and-done. Bad business decision IMO.

Terps....am I right on that?

While, I am not terps, I don't disagree with your take here. They needed that 1.5 MM to give to Mac Marshall, but he went back to LSU anyway. Luhnow and crew really struck out and if they lose the grievance are in serious trouble from a PR and organizational stand point.

I would say that the upside that Aiken has, according to all the scouts, far exceeds the concerns that houston has. So ya, I think the Astros shot themselves in the foot here. Not only will this cost them Aiken this year, but it will also discourage them from picking him next year because of the bad blood. And the scouts, which is all I can go off because I've never seen him in person, say that he's the best high school arm (certainly the best lefty) to ever come out. People think that the health concern is way overblown, and that houston low balled him just because they thought his signability was very high (signability is the chance that a person will sign with a team because he'd rather not go to college for 3 years). In other words, Houston thought that Aiken would sign with them no problem, so they offered a lot of money elsewhere, namely their 21st round selection. Now, Houston knows that Aiken's signability was not as high as they thought, and people are speculating on whether houston "manipulated" his health reports in order to compensate an actual excuse.

They had already offered the rest of their draft pool so much money because they thought signing aiken was gonna be easy. So, after they inked the rest of their pool, they went up to aiken and said "this is our offer because your arm slightly concerns us" and Aiken said "hell no I'm worth more than that." This shocked houston because they thought his signability was high. Apparently, they called Aiken's agent 3 times the day before the deadline but he didn't respond because he thought that what houston did was illegal/immoral.

TL;DR Houston shot themselves in the foot because they gave out too much money to the rest of their picks thinking Aiken would be easy to sign. When they figured out that he wasn't going to sell himself short, they panicked. Any other team would have given him 6 million or more, despite the arm issues. Houston is being accused of manipulating these health issues to make them sound worse than they really are in order to give a reasonable excuse for their low ball offer

I thank you kindly....no kidding.

You know your baseball young man.....good to have you on "our Ranger posting staff." :suds:

No problem. I've been very fortunate to know people inside the industry and I'm happy to clarify

And what happens if the mlb declares him a free agent, Terps? A bidding war?

mlb can't declare him an FA. He's gotta go to college or play independently, which he surely wont do. He'll end up at JUCO and come out again next year. He already has a committment to UCLA, but this late in the game it would be plain silly to go there when you probably could be picked 1st next year without even picking up a ball.

I've not read that they don't have the power to do it. I just think they are reticent to do declare him one.

You can't become a free agent unless you've spent 3 years of minor league service to one team. So, it would be out of the rules and unprecedented, but if they decide to rule in favor of Aiken, maybe they will allow an exception.

There's gotta be some rite of passage into a major league contract. whether it be by draft, international team, independent team, etc'

His other option is to go to a tryout. This would be stupid though, because team's are limited in how much they can offer at these tryouts. So Aiken, who was just complaining about being offered 5 mil, would then be being offered under 1 mil, except that he would get to choose which team's offer he accepted.

His agent will tell him to go to juco and try again next year because the alternatives will cost him millions or decrease his value with increased age.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Can confirm union filed grievance against #Astros, as 1st reported by Murray Chass. Argues team tried to manipulate signings of Aiken, etc.

We should try to trade for this kid if its possible. Seems like we could get a good deal at the moment. Not sure what it would take though. Have a be a prospects for prospects deal which isn't really common.

We can't trade for him. He's not on a team.

We can draft him though... which is why getting the first pick next year could be huge. HUGE. Not just a typical first overall pick. Its hard to pan out mlb draft picks, but we can only go with what we got and what the experts say. Next clayton kershaw is the ceiling, probably around david price is an average bet, YOU GOTTA GET THAT BOY

So our season does have purpose. There will be a handful of teams vying for that #1 pick, us, the Astros, the Rockies, others. And it will come down to the wire. What a warped way of continuing to follow this season.

Well, as of now its ours. And considering that we actually had an okay 1st two months, and that its just been the last two that have been disastrous. We actually hung in there for awhile. So, the current trend would almost freakin assure us of the pick. Guess we'll see. It is important though. That's what I've been saying. If we're gonna go down, don't go down swinging lol

We can't make any meaningful difference so I'll leave it up to those who can. Who's on first?

Between Toronto's injuries and Kluber pitching a perfect game thru 6 against KC. Maybe this will motivate Toronto or KC to give up something decent for Rios.

I've been saying for the last few months that our luck has been so terrible. We deserve the first pick. Get it done.
