I had to tivo the game, but it allowed me to go back and watch it after reading this entire debate thread. I have always thought that Smith is not as bad as some people are saying on this board, that he was having a really good year, and that I would take him over a whole list of qbs currently in the NFL, but even I have to admit that he is limited, I hate how many sacks he takes, and I am astounded with how good our offensive line is and our plethora of good receivers that the pass plays usually are short gains. I rarely see him throw a dart when the pocket is collapsing or make that type of difficult throw. I have no idea whether that's a physical or mental limitation, but he doesn't do it.
But now I'm convinced we need to start Kaep. The first reason is practical -- if Kaep starts to stink (unlikely, but still), we can go back to Smith -- but if we start Smith, the first time he has a mediocre game or misses a throw or gets sacked, the public is just going to turn on him again -- that's a little unfair, but there it is. Second, is that Kaep does all those things that Smith is unable to do I mentioned earlier, and to me he's shown that he not a liability in terms of his ability to read defenses, audible, and change plays -- which I had thought were Smith's huge advantage over Kaep. I just have the feeling watching Kaep that if we play the Giants, or the Falcons in the playoffs that he can make that big throw while people are all over him, or potentially run 70 yards for a score, I don't have that feeling with Smith -- despite the New Orleans game last year. I feel bad for Smith, I've always thought he got a raw deal from our earlier coaching carousel, he's been a standup guy, and he's had a really good year and has done nothing to lose this job, I just think that Kaep has shown he has a higher ceiling in most respects.
