I would absolutely think that you would want your backup to get reps when your starter(s) are nicked up and he is only a rookie.

The point I am making is that there is a disconnect between what Gruden needs to do as a HC trying to save his job and what is best for the development of the team's future franchise QB. And its a completely understandable disconnect that the FO has to address. Gruden is coaching game by game to save his job. At this point, he has zero motivation to develop a QB that really won't be ready until after this year. Because in all likelihood, Gruden won't be here after this year unless he starts winning games. And clearly he has made the determination that both Case and Colt give him the better chance of winning this sunday.

I say that it's too late to save his job! He's absolutely NOT doing anything to save his job because he can't, that would have been done in the years preceding this one. In fact saving his job at this point should have begun when he first took the job. BTW: saving his job and developing the team's future franchise QB is one and the same thing. Even when the writing is on the wall, you continue to do your work because you're either a professional or you're not. The team as it currently functions is a direct reflection on the work that he demands from his players. If there's interference from the front office then it is also his responsibility to make it clear to his bosses that he won't put up with that shit. Dude is soft, he loves the money and has no spine to save himself from this embarrassment that he fields, but that's Jay! He is by all accounts a very likeable guy but in all honesty, if the choice between winning and losing came down to being likeable or that respected SOB who made his men do their jobs at a high level, I'll take the latter, every time!

He mishandled Haskins . He put him in down 14 to 0 and had the rookie try and make a comeback

There hasn’t been much film of Haskins game vs the giants and I would be interested in seeing the breakdown .

I know this Haskins started our Rocky in the preseason and became better each game .

The same will happen here

It’s also not an indictment on Haskins, who is coming early and staying late and taking extra meetings. He’s trying. It’s just not happening at a speed that’s suitable for him to currently be playing NFL football at an acceptable level.

Dwayne Haskins and Jay Gruden
This situation is a bit harder to discuss because it is a developing story this week.

Basically, the situation is eerily and disturbingly similar to the RG3-Mike Shanahan tale.

Reports say that the Redskins rookie quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, was targeted draft pick of Dan Snyder, while Jay Gruden and his coaching staff didn’t really want him.

Of course, we know who won that disagreement. But it is the coaching staff, the players and Haskins himself who are paying the price.

This is hardly the first time a head coach was forced to work with and develop a player he wouldn’t have chosen himself, but when you consider, first, that this appears to be a “win or you’re fired” year for Jay Gruden, and, second, that the franchise just went through this situation with RG3 from 2012 to 2015, it seems indefensible that Dan Snyder would do it again.

While some have complained that the coaching staff isn't doing enough to develop Haskins I believe the excerpts above explain the situation. It doesn't mean the kid can't play, it means he is NOT READY to play. We knew when he was drafted he was not ready to play. If Snyder continues to handle this situation like he did with Griffin I feel for the kid because I believe it will only hurt him.

I'm not sure if you wanted to post a link to this story or not. I would love to read it if you're able to tell where it's posted. Thanks!

Oh BTW; Didn't Bill Parcells once say that "it's difficult to cook the meal if you're not buying the groceries," or something to that effect? Well, here in D.C. the head coach has never been the decision maker in drafting a player. Gruden signed on knowing this and IMHO, has zero cause to complain about it now! Even if he didn't like the pick, his job was and remains to get the [player ready to go and at the highest level, be outstanding.

If this is true, then I'm calling neglect/ bias/ subterfuge/ and/or wanton disregard based upon "feelings." I'd prefer to read the story first in order to gain context and that's why I used "IF." So here's my question, If the head coach and/or other coaches didn't want the young man here in the first place, what are the chances that he'll EVER be "ready" from their perspective? (just asking:noidea:) Maybe this explains why he didn't get any prep time.

The thread the article is in is called "It's Simply the Best Article …" I thought it was a good article. I think I pulled out all of the things that addressed Haskins.

You are correct about the Parcells line. It is fairly widely known that Kyle Smith and Gruden make most of the picks. They are close. It is also fairly well known that Dan wanted Haskins.

I did not love any QB in this draft. Daniel Jones was probably most prepared after playing 3 years at Duke under Cutcliffe who is a very good QBs coach.

I said this before or right after the draft or both. Being a Penn State fan I watched him play against the Nittany Lions. Penn State had his number, they shut him down and had a good lead. After halftime Ohio State started throwing screens all over the place. Penn State had no answer. Penn State was still ahead very late in the game and Ohio State had the ball with 90ish yards to go. They scored on the third straight screen pass to win. Overall talent and coaching won the game, not the QB. That was one game though.

The reason I posted parts of the article is because you and others keep saying the kid wasn't prepared. No kidding!! He is not ready yet. Like any young QB he is getting extra coaching but not at the expense of whoever is going to start. This isn't mishandling, this is what you do. He clearly proved he was not ready yet. That is fine. We know he is not ready but he seems eager to learn and I like that.

I am more encouraged since he was drafted than before. He has the arm. I like how he moves in the pocket. He can escape a little. He seems to have big play potential written all over him. if you were to replay some of those big plays some were close to mistakes. Relax, let the kid learn. He is likely to have to learn a new system next year. If he is a kid you like you wouldn't wish him being drafted by the Redskins. Selfishly I wanted Navorro Bowman here for years but for his sake I am glad he never came here.

I have already said how I feel about playing him now. No need to repeat it again.

Couldn’t agree more. Not sure what others were looking at when stating he has taken a step back from his OSU days or that he isn’t prepared as others in his draft class are. Well, this was the known issue with Haskins. He just hasn’t played enough to really understand what he really is and can be. He is promising, but raw. Doesn’t mean he can get there, he just isn’t there yet. At this point, the kid needs snaps. There is only so much you can learn in a classroom or in walk throughs. He needs to apply these learnings on the field. Unfortunately some of the best learning experiences happen with mistakes.

Which brings me back to my original point. Assuming Gruden is interested in keeping his job and realizing, as we all do, that if he doesn’t win, he may be fired any day, I can completely understand why Gruden would rather see colt or case behind center. This doesn’t mean that this is in the best long term interest of either Haskins or the franchise, but to me it’s a very understandable action on his part.

Every mock draft or scouting report had Haskins going in round one . If you are going to play him give him 1st team reps in practice and stop dicking around

He will learn and he will be fine

He was went in as a backup. Why would he get first team reps? This not some new revelation to the NFL.

He would get first team reps because he was the back-up and only available QB they had on the active roster behind their starter, who BTW, was wearing a walking boot during the week! Common sense dictates the need to prepare your back-up in the event that Case's gimpy foot wouldn't hold up during the game. C'mon coach!

The worse part of this nonsense is... Gruden said after the game that the reason why he pulled Case was because he physically couldn't go, remember?
