I like Johnston, I think he could work out for us. Time will tell, of course, but he strikes me as a coach with really good hockey sense and the capacity to adjust from his resume in Portland.

Adjust from his resume in Portland? WTF does that even mean?

He was a stud coach here in Portland...wish he would bring his assistant with him as that guy is potentially a better coach

NHL teams made special trades/arraingements so that their draftees could play in Portland under Johnston

Oh, no, he doesn't adjust from his resume, it's from his resume that I gather he can adjust.

Don't have it, don't love it. If you ever complained this team lacked depth in the bottom six, and had too many one dimensional players, no way you could hate this deal though. Spalding is a decent depth player, and Hornqvist is a very good all around player, a sure fire top six forward, who can play in close to the net.

Yeah good depth move but Neal was our best trade able asset, would've liked to have gotten more. At this rate my hopes for Connor McDavid might not be far fetched.

Fair point, I think the failing is not getting a draft pick in the mid rounds, since Shero traded them all away at the deadline.

Honestly I think I would have rather traded Neal for Hornqvist and some sort of mid round pick. Gives us a bit of cal relief and gives us picks. I think we have enough bottom six forwards in the organization but Bylsma refused to give them a chance.

Fair point as well, not sure I buy they are brimming with 3rd liners in the minors, 4th liners I agree they have enough.

Valid point. Can't disagree there.

Not sure there are 3rd liners either, but I do think that the cap space we are going to end up using on Spaling could have been used on a FA that could play on the third line.

I hope they keep Goc, because honestly the UFA market is really thin.

My other problem is why now? There were no draft picks involved or salary cap relief for FA so why rush trading him? If we waited longer and let things play out we could have gotten a much bigger return from a team desperate after striking out in FA.

Yeah, it's curious for sure. I guess sitting in the same room with other GM's makes trades happen more naturally.

well if you get rid of neal, why not get rid of Fleury too. Pitt should just keep blowing the team up

He's not blocking anyone, as their best prospect is still 2 years away at least. And there isn't much out there as far as goalies go. Don't see a reason too, unless you get blown away by an offer, which is not likely.
