So a bust and a late 2nd rounder for a double digit sack guy.

I'm assuming New England is going cheap on pass rushers? Thats an interesting strategy

Absolutely no doubt they are going after Chris Long.

The Pats FO probably views Chandler Jones as overvalued by the market and wanted a 2nd round pick instead of a potential 3rd round comp pick (or none at all- you never know) for him. The extra pick is especially useful for this draft for the obvious impact of deflategate.

Yeah, it seems like they didn't want to give him a Justin Houston type contract but uh...pass rushers are kind of a big deal.

The Patriots locker room has to be pissed

IDK much about Cooper but if he was a starter, it makes sense for NE...they move a good, but not great pass rusher, pick a starting OG and in a deep DL draft...they have 60 and 61 now I think...may not be done dealing.

Good deal for both sides.

Pat's weren't going to be able to afford all of their DL and they traded the one they weren't going to resign next offseason.

Card's had already cashed in on Cooper so in essence they traded for pass rusher with a backup RG and a 2nd rounder. And the Pat's get a high pick and one hell of a talented throw in.

Lots to be happy about for both teams IMO.

No doubt another Belichick message to a player that had some strange off the field issues this past season and a move to obtain more draft picks. Not sure that Patriot fans are going to be incredibly upset, as this helps out their O-line significantly as well.

Cooper wasn't starting at the end of last season for Arizona after struggling and then getting injured.

I found this article with a google search. The tl;dr on Cooper has been that be has been the awful combination of bad and injury prone.

-----------------------------------------------------

The Cardinals took small steps toward better health Wednesday, not that it will have much discernible effect when it comes to the on-field product against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

The most notable development for the Cardinals was a full practice from guard Jonathan Cooper. Cooper missed the past two games with a knee injury, and seems to have lost his starting job at right guard in the process.

Veteran Ted Larsen has usurped the former first-round pick, according to coach Bruce Arians.

“Ted’s playing better,” Arians said.

Given the history of Arians’ criticism of Cooper and fellow first-rounder D.J. Humphries, the tackle drafted by the Cardinals this past spring, that comment may seem damning. But Arians insists that’s not the case.

Both players have pleased the head coach with their progress, Arians said. It’s just that with the Cardinals fighting for a first-round playoff bye, the coach doesn’t feel like dealing with the growing pains of a young player when a steadier option is available.

“When you look at the offensive linemen that are coming out of college today, it’s going to take them a while to get at this level,” Arians said. “(Cooper’s) tough, he’s athletic. He’s just continuing to grow. Right now we don’t have time for the growth, because Teddy’s got more experience and he’s playing better. But I think he’s going to be a heck of a player, just like D.J.

The crunch was next year Jones, Hightower, Collins and Butler all become free agents.

Jones could be lost to highest bidder for almost nothing. And they have to re-sign the latter 3 for sure.

So his value was high now.

The Patriot way.

Given how hyped up the DL is in this class, the obvious answer is they'll simply go DL instead with their two 2nd rounders. Bold move in any case for sure.

Cardinals acquired DE Chandler Jones from the Patriots in exchange for OG Jonathan Cooper and a second-round draft pick.

Still only 26, Jones is one of the league's best pass rushers, but is headed into the final year of his rookie contract. A looming mega-deal coupled with a bizarre January incident where Jones showed up to a police station high on synthetic marijuana seem to have cooled the Pats on their 2012 first-rounder. As for the Cardinals, Jones is the linchpin pass rusher they've been seeking for years now. An extension will likely be hammered out in short order. Jones has 36 sacks in 55 career games.

He will be missed:suds:

Yeah, its an NBA type of trade. You trade your asset for pennies on the dollar instead of watching him leave for nothing.

The Patriots with Cooper and Long and without Jones are a worse team by quite a bit imo. They need to get something from this draft.

Arizona still needs to make moves to compete with Carolina, though. Obviously a bad matchup for them still but a pass rusher helps a lot.

Oh, maybe he's just a guy to make the deal work and NE can go OG and DL in the draft...sorta getting a pick back...for AZ it's not all bad either...Jones should thrive on that DL...worth a 2nd, but I wanna say he's about ready to come off his rookie deal...and getting ready to cost some real money....typical BB move.

I'll enjoy seeing him, chase the Wee One all over twice a year.....

Jones had already started indicating that he would be looking for a max contract with a huge guarantee. I think he was smoking some of that Colorado Medical Weed. Rumors were that he would be willing to sign a new contract for $12M a year for 5 years. He wanted $30M Guaranteed and a $12M Signing bonus. That was all rumor, but with the free agents this year getting big bucks, it wouldn't be surprising. Belichick still has to figure out how he will resign Malcolm Butler, Dontae Hightower and Jamie Collins next year.
