Why is it that we have started out like gang busters on offense in games with Stanford, Texas, and Cal, and then completely fold? That's on the coaching staff. As Leo Durocher said, "Nice guys finish last."
I agree to a point. The problem is, the coaching staff can only prepare the players during the prior week and call the plays that have the best chance of success.
But, at the end of the day, the players have to execute the game plan and the plays. They are the ones on the field. The worst part, imo, is the penalties.
I don't even particularly have an issue with the number of penalties. If you are playing aggressive football on both sides, you are going to incur some penalties.
To me, it's when the penalties occur that is the problem. How many times have we seen drives stalled because of a penalty that came on a play where there was a significant gain or during a crucial drive?
It's not just the offense either. While they have not been as guilty as the offense, we've seen the defense about to get off the field because they got a stop on 3rd down, only see them called for a penalty to extend the drive. Biggie's penalty on Saturday was just the most recent and most costly.
