Ribeiro won't be back in DC, and good riddance. He's a talented player, but a head case and cost us 2-3 games this year due to his lack of discipline. It wouldn't even be a question if we had traded for a center instead of Erat. Or simply had we traded Ribieiro away for a younger center and kept Forsberg, we'd be in a lot better shape for next year.
He's half right. The horrible officiating *IS* why the Caps lost. And that *IS* what they are complaining about.
There's no question bad officiating can contribute to a loss. But in a 7-game series, if you think it's the primary reason, well, you probably didn't do enough right in the other facets.
Penalties or not, the Caps couldn't score at even-strength down the stretch. That should be the fans' major gripe.
From what I can tell, it was not knowing what a penalty was - they got called for it and the Rangers didn't. That altered the way they played the game (timid, defensively and on their heels) and probably contributed to the lack of offense.
And in Game 2 when the Caps put it out from inside their zone in the 3rd, it didn't get called. Rangers did it in OT, it did get called and Caps scored on the ensuing pp.
I can't imagine a team would change the way they play off of what they would deem to be a bad call. Bad calls happen all the time, if they affect your team's play, well that's the coaches fault.

Washington Capitals coach Adam Oates is not happy about New York Rangers coach John Tortorella characterizing the Caps' complaints about officiating as whining.
"Well, I think he's out of line," Oates said on Washington's 106.7 The Fan. "[Tortorella] should be worried about his own series. We didn't whine once during the series. I never complained. I don't know, did you guys ever hear me complain about officiating?"
Oates seemed so frustrated that he was asked whether he could beat up Tortorella.
"Yes," Oates said, "easily."

He already did yesterday but the Russians lost 8-3 to the US
/Yinzer John Gibson was great between the pipes for the Americans.
I have no idea. I know he headed to Russia to play, but I'm not sure if he's actually played at all. If he's hurt, I hope not. Though either way it's a hairline fracture so he should be fine with some rest.
