that kind of thing (accidentally on purpose interference) was happening all over the ice and was going uncalled

who needs rules

Just making a counter argument to your statement. Did Kelly deserve a penalty for that elbow. Yes he did. Did JVR deserve a interference call. Yes he did. Kelly did not have the puck and was nowhere near it and gets taken down.

I don't disagree with the scrutiny of the refs, however I really do think technology is the main reason for the uproar in recent years more so than the quality of officiating itself. So many angles, so many replays and so much more for them to interpret now adays. Heck, look at the debates we have on here on whether or not hits were questionable or not after watching countless replays, now think about having to make that decision split second in a big game.

The one thing I will always get on refs about is consistency. All or nothing, no inbetween.

I think off setting minors is warranted as well and then a review on Kelly for that elbow.

Excellent point. All of us are armchair refs with the benefit of Instant reply etc.

That Kelly elbow probably should be reviewed, but I doubt that it will be. I think offsetting minors should have been called though.

sorry I meant that in my head as well I still think Lucic should have been called on the Daniel Sedin Style Crushing Hit....

rule book shmule book

45.3 Major Penalty - A major penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, shall be imposed on any player who uses his elbow to foul an opponent. A major penalty must be imposed under this rule for a foul resulting in an injury to the face or head of an opponent

Definitely borderline that's for sure and instead of sitting in the box, he pots the goal to make it 4-3. I wonder how many questions Kerry Fraser will get from Leafs fans about whether or not Lucic should have received a penalty.

I don't think Leafs fans are over the Gretzky high stick on Gilmour back in '93 (Fraser was the lone ref on the ice that night), the Lucic hit must feel like piling on.

/I hope klyper is okay.

Bitching about referees gets old, in every sport. They are always inconsistent and people love to watch replays from several camera angles and second guess what they have to decide at full speed in real time.

I guess it is easier to blame officiating or to look for a conspiracy than admit you just didn't get the job done. I always prefer to take responsibility rather than give it to others. I have always thought that if something was my responsibility than it is in my power to change the outcome in the future.

My general feeling is that if you put yourself in a position where one bad call decides the game or even the series, then you didn't do you job. The major benchmark in this is th 99 cup final. Whining about Brett Hull's skate completely glosses over the fact that the Sabres had no answer for the east/west movement of the Stars' forwards. None. All series.

But there are some shining examples from this round, particularly the Sens/Habs and Kings / Blues series that left me wondering WTF was going on.

And it doesn't stop on the ice, Shanahan has fucked up as many suspensions as he has fucked up non-reviews. It's terrible.

As much as I hate to admit it, Toronto fans might just have a legit beef with the non-boarding call on Lucic. They really might.

Im all for personal/team accountability but far too many teams/fans are pointing to questionable refereeing for my liking ... nhl needs to fix it ... its devolving into wwe type storylines

did the referee really miss what Kelly did to JVR last night ... caman! ... he needed a replay to figure out what happened when he was standing 15 feet away???

problem is its only going to get worse as nhl is having bigtime issues hiring/recruitung/training capable refs (kerry fraser even admitted to this)

Gary likes the media coverage. There is no such thing as bad press. And pumping up made up controversy turned NASCAR into a billion dollar behemoth.

I don't think Leafs fans are over the Gretzky high stick on Gilmour back in '93 (Fraser was the lone ref on the ice that night), the Lucic hit must feel like piling on.

It pains me to say that I feel for Leaves' fans... but damn. A PP where they score on the boarding that wasn't, and they are not "chokers" today.

Even without scoring, it kills any momentum the Bruins had.

I heartily disagree with getting in game review on penalties. There is a line. Do I think they need to hold refs accountable for bad performances? Yes. But overturning calls in game would not end well and would just muck up everything. I agree with the sentiment that someone said on here recently (sorry, can't recall who is was...maybe 43? DS?): there needs to be changes to the rule book to make life a bit easier on the refs. Some rules need to be streamlined, some need to be GONE. In the same breath though, the refs are often too into the "code" of the game, etc. They'll ignore things knowingly because "well, it's OT, can't do that" or "well, we already gave them a few, so it's the other teams turn". That's part of human nature to keep it fair...but if a one team is committing more penalties than the other, it's not going to be fair. It's not supposed to be fair when you shoot yourself in the foot.

:agree:

Half of the time, they are scrambling to get out of the way of the play or suddenly on the wrong side of the rink (when the puck gets passed East to West) while trying to follow the action & determine if a call should be made.

My biggest gripe about officiating is how does the ref 5 feet from the infraction not make the call but the ref at center ice 100 feet away does?

Also, good teams overcome bad officiating.

/sort of off tangent here but the #1 reason i hate Steelers fans is it's always the refs fault they lose. I have never met a Steelers fan who can admit the other team was better etc... Fucking yinzers.

so i guess the other "half of the time" you have referee Brad Watson staring at the JVR/Chris kelly exchange from the corner bringing his whistle to his mouth and then deciding maybe he wont exhale this time ... just because

Well, if NFL games weren't so dependent on the refs it may be different. Baseball is the only other sport that's more hinged on an official. You know what bad habit I have from watching too much NFL football? After every goal there's a few second pause where I think "did it count?!" because that's how today's NFL fans must act. But yeah, yinzers too.

I guess the question is how much lighter will OV be in the wallet? 10K has been the practice in the past.

This thread makes me nervous about the officiating tonight.
