the best Mexican places around here are on the south side which is heavy Hispanic population. great Mexican restaurants too although they still don't beat the Mexican restaurants I went to down in Texas. but I'd say some of the best Mexican food I've ever had was the stuff off the taco truck that drives around the low ends of Milwaukee

do you like the cajun cooking ? I love jambalaya and gumbo.

the food and the variety are amazing here, but every once in awhile just start craving some really good Mexican food and for some bizarre reason they just don't do it very well here. there's a bar & grill uptown in New Orleans but that's 45 minutes away & to be honest it's tolerable at best

I make a killer etouffee but the only way I can make gumbo is by cheating and buying some roux that I know is pretty good. my homemade roux isn't consistent. jambalaya when it's made right is to die for, you get that little bit of sweet from the rice and then the fire starts burning from the sausage & spices

I've never had true cajun cooking before, always have wanted to go down to New Orleans for Mardi Gras to party and get that delicious cajun cooking. also wanna try alligator down there or in Florida.

speaking of alligator, they have a Joe's Crabshack anywhere by anybody? the only one I've been to was in Galveston, but when a hurricane came thru there a little after Katrina, it destroyed it. but I do know they're a chain restaurant

any reason you've decided to go sober for the next few months or prefer not to share?

There's 2 or 3 here in town that are passable, but the one I've been going to most lately used to be pretty small and was primarily take out. They just moved to a new location, bigger and have been packing in the people. Their TexMex is OK, but they serve authentic Mexican shrimp cocktail and a couple of grilled shrimp dishes that are to die for.

used to be a place in the Montrose area of Houston that served authentic shrimp & fish like you would find on the Mexican coast, never could figure out their spices and they weren't talking. little hole in the wall with a small patio for those 3 days of the year you could use it in Houston. Used to take clients & visitors there to impress them, then freak them out a little by walking the Montrose for awhile so they could check out the weirdness

there is a cajun restaurant here, and it is pretty good. I have made way better jambalaya, and gumbo...but I am so bad about not following a recipe...just cooking as I go, so I fail a lot.

I made some awesome gumbo about 3 times...then the last 2 times I failed so bad I haven`t wanted it since!

I love Cajun, but I don't really think there is any really good Cajun here in Texas, except close to LA. There sure isn't any here in the north hill country.

I am really puttin a hurtin on myself with how I have been drinking....if i keep this shit up I will be on meds for all the health issues...my health is getting worse and worse lately. I hardly ever do cardio anymore, and only lift weights 3 times a week.....and with the drinking I eat bad....just a big snowball of a fuckstorm that I need to quit.

I still had fun

When I was a kid in Explorers, we went camping down there for a week during Spring Break. It was a blast, sleeping on the beach and girls everywhere. Only 2 leaders and one was pretty young. So we felt like we were getting away with everything.

both of the ones that were in NOLA shut down, closest I can think of is Baton Rouge. They've still got them in Houston though. Best thing I ever got at one was they used to make a seafood jalapeno popper for the bar that was great. used cream cheese to bind the seafood and then huge jalapenos, that I always suspected they cleaned & sliced and stored for a few days to make them really hot

you ever come down for Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest just let me know, I can clue you in and give you some tips to help you have a better time
