When the Mets sign a pitcher, they should just get the Tommy John surgery out of the way first.

I'll go even further and say any team that drafts a hard throwing pitcher should just get the Tommy John surgery out of the way first.

Ahhh, Tommy John surgery. We're not even to the peak of the issue. It's going to get worse and worse before (hopefully) starting to wane. I'll step onto my highest soapbox to preach this: PARENTS...THIS IS ON YOU (much of the time). Limit pitches, don't let your kid throw breaking pitches as a 10 year old, let them play more than one sport. Simple. The issue is that we live in a world of crazy parents who think their 12 year old is in line to get a full-ride, so they play them on a rec team, two travel teams, and have them with a throwing coach in the offseason instead of playing basketball instead. DON'T have them pitch four times in the week because they're all different teams. There's a reason pitch counts exist. I don't CARE if they can throw a mean curve at 10, let them grow before using it. I don't care if you want to see them win at everything, let them have an offseason. Let them recover. And for goodness sake, let them have a childhood.

A problem(less important than health but still important once they get to the bigs) is that pitchers can't even control their fastball because they don't learn how to throw it correctly when they're young, because they're too focused on breaking pitches

And they're generally focused on throwing as hard as possible when it comes to a fastball. A lot of this part rests on coaches, who are generally just parents who have volunteered. At lower levels of course, the point is just to learn the game, be active, and have some fun, but at a certain age the parent coaching gets a little worrisome, because they often don't know a lick about specifics. Oh man, this could get me into a rant about girl's sports and the lack of women coaches. Must resist.

If young kids learned how to control their fastball and be able to locate it from side to side on the strike zone, they wouldn't have to worry about throwing those sick breaking balls and off speed pitches - you don't need to have those types of pitches to be successful - if they learned how to use their fastball in other ways, they could last a LOT longer - just ask Jamie Moyer, who pitched forever and forever - he didn't need all those crazy pitches to be successful

There is no standard as to how coaches teach pitchers - we don't know if a kid's delivery will lead to problems in the future. And in the future, when professional coaches try to change the mechanics, how do we know it's for the better? We don't. The entire system from essentially Little League to the pros is so flawed with respect to pitchers and their health.

Pretty much. There are few things we know to avoid in regard to mechanics simply based on the stress on the UCL, but outside of that there's no standard. And we're talking about kids...kids who grow on the daily. It's a moving target. Essentially, when they're pre-HS, just teach the basics, limit counts, etc. The only thing I'll say in regard to avoiding with kids and mechanics is to watch the arm slot. The difficult part being of course that there's a danger zone on both sides, too high or too low.

Also, since this is the Pangos and Bell thread, baby Sabonis is a heck of a player (much like his dad).

Happy Birthday Cobie!! Vegas baby!

Thanks dash! No Vegas for me, but I still made out pretty well($345 in cash)

Had a nice day - went to Dairy Queen and got a Grilled Chicken Sandwich, some fries and a triple berry smoothie - then later on had a homemade fudge truffle cake - and now to top it off, watching some hockey(flipping through ANA/NYR and VAN/ARZ) as usual

Actually the grilled chicken sandwich is one of the healthier meals that DQ has - it's only 390 calories or so

And I only had ONE piece of cake - I'm a pretty healthy person as far as eating goes - when I was younger I used to weigh around 200-210, now I'm around 160

Does anyone order from ebay? I've never ordered from there before, just wondering what people's experiences are on there

It's going to be mixed really. It all depends on the quality of the seller.

Ebay has decent consumer protections in place (i.e., if the seller tries to screw you), so it's unlikely you'd get burned.

I wouldn't make a major purchase on eBay, as I did get burned one time (seller never delivered the item). Also, eBay wasn't very supportive when I tried to recoup my money. Thus, I've set my limit for any future purchases on eBay to $100 and under.

Yep, I try to look at the user's selling rate and what not - I read if it's anywhere under 99 percent, then it might be a problem

Makes sense

I'm looking at hockey cards - I like collecting sets and certain players - there's sites like comc.com that have a great selection but their shipping rates are outrageous(3 dollars to start and then .25 for each card)

If you're looking at hockey cards, I'd specifically check the feedback for comments on shipping/packaging. Most of what I've ever ordered was used books and some would come very well packaged, while others would just be slipped into a manila envelope. Obviously I never knew exactly what condition they were in before they were shipped, but a few of them showed up in less-than-ideal condition.
