For their part, the NCAA has stated that Baylor never even asked for a waiver for him, which would have allowed him to receive some support for living expenses.

There's precedent for that too, so there's a good chance it would have succeeded.

It sounds to me like there's something more to this story that we're not hearing.

It could simply be that the kid didn't know that he had to do this stuff. I understand of course that the onus is on the athlete to be responsible about it, but I'm assuming he was probably 19 or 20. My biggest complaint is that they discipline stuff like this (or stuff like getting one free dinner) like their lives depend upon it, but the big stuff that we all are aware happens at some big schools goes ignored.

I'm guessing Baylor would have known what to do - or at least put in a serious effort - had they been really intent on helping him.

I get where you're coming from though. I wish they'd come down hard on these programs more often like they did to USC.

Yeah, the school is guilty as well...I mean, I can rant on both D1 football programs and the NCAA for hours. If my kid ever gets that opportunity, I'd have to contain my eye rolling when coaches come and recruit pretending like they deeply care.

Well they do deeply care.

Oh wait, you meant about something besides winning?

Nevermind then.

I've been lucky to work with some great coaches in my young career, all D3 of course, and the relationships they develop can be so beneficial to athletes. There's so many young guys that are fawned over during recruitment, they get there, find out they were lied to, and get screwed by the system. "Oh, you were told you'd get a shot to start, and now you're not even though you've earned it? Want to transfer? Well, you lost a year of eligibility." "Coach, you're leaving your job even though you have five years on that contract you signed? K, bye!" Messed up. I know a recent one that grinded my gears was with Chryst when he left for Wisconsin. OL recruit that had committed there EARLY and never wavered, ignored other teams that were interested, was going to enroll this spring...Chryst gets there in the fall and tells him he's not going to be accepted academically. Even though the old staff said they had made it work, and this kid had worked his tail off in his junior/senior years to get his GPA up. That could easily be on the old staff if they were lying to him, or on the new staff who decided they didn't want to petition for the kid and would rather open up that scholarship spot.

In deference to Pixie, DarkStone, Dare and others, I'd remove his hat before beating his face into a bloody piece of meat.

The team actually felt it necessary to make a statement about it. Incredible world we're in.

So it looks like a Tigers/Pirates World Series this year judging by early action.
