I am probably in the minority, but yes. If there is sufficient evidence that a nation is building an army to possibly begin a war against the "free world", and/or is harboring nuclear weapons, then I am all for taking them out before any of the real BIG shit hits the fan.

Probably :P

I don't think people will go for it again after the Iraq war when all of the evidence proved to be either wholly unreliable or completely made-up.

Short of a credible threat directly from the horse's mouth (emphasis on credible since Ahmadinejad likes to talk but has no actual military authority), I don't see the people supporting another pre-emptive war.

I honestly don't see Putin as a risk to the US at all.

The older generation of Russians may still harbor a grudge against the US, but the younger generation loves it (or maybe more broadly, Western "decadence" in general, not just US).

If you visit Moscow, there's two very high-end shopping malls that people love, the younger people all wear designer clothes and shoes, and they love McDonald's, TGI Fridays, and American cigarettes.

Because of all that, I don't think that the people will let the government pull one over on them like they did after the Russian Revolution. There's no popular support and there's no evil boogey-man that they can point to to scare the people. Not to mention that the internet, cable news, etc. will make it much harder for the government to randomly disappear people without people knowing what's happening.

But hey, you never know. Just my opinion.

You mean like Putin serving for eight years. Picking the next president and making Medvedev appoint him Prime Minister, then having some legislation passed that could make him be President till 2024 if elected... Then becoming President?

What I was referring to was the type of thing that happens where things have gone too far before people realize what's happening.

Although his tactics are questionable, they've been fairly well publicized in the media (domestic and foreign).

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice... well, don't get fooled again.

Russia had a huge army before and we never attacked each other. A war between the two countries, preemptive or not, will not have a winner but would instead have utter destruction.

Let them build their armies and weapons, if that's even what they will do, and then let them pay for it and keep paying for it. I seem to recall that worked before.

Indeed, they were building a massive army while half of their schools didn't even have heat. And we're talking about Russia here - seems to be it's a might bit cold there.
