That's a pretty good read about how NHL ownership works.

These owners typically absorb losses while franchise values grow. These figures may be somewhat misleading in Melnyk's case as well. He owns the arena and technically, IIRC, the team pays him rent.

Nonetheless this financial situation is pretty common in the NHL. It will all crash and burn sooner or later and I'm not necessarily talking about Melnyk.

And it's why Bettman will never go away. It's a terrible business model, but the owners have ways of moving invisible money from the team to themselves.

The Blue Jackets went from "losing 10 mil a year" to "financially stable" just by convincing the city to buy the Arena from Nationwide who owned it since it was built. Nothing else really changed. Nationwide pays the city for naming rights (which the city gives right back in tax breaks so they don't move out of the city to the burbs) and is free of operating expenses. City pays to run concessions and splits the proft with the team and the team pays the city (not Nationwide) rent. Basically, the money went from clockwise movement to counter-clockwise.

@ChrisKuc
#Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook has indeed named his newborn Carter Seven Seabrook. Probably good Seabrook's jersey number isn't Zero.

Nice signing by the Wings, this kid is dynamite:

aaronward_nhl: Gustav Nyquist and the Detroit Red Wings have come to terms on a 2 year/$950k per year contract. #TSN
