only way we make any moves in UFA market is if we are dumping Higgins and Bieksa. I dont think we have the cap room to make any moves and sign RFAs.

Id be happy with ZERO moves but dumping players for draft picks and letting youth take over
In that case, they should be looking for takers for the Sedins. They're both capable producers but at age 35 they aren't going to be very useful by the time the youth movement bears fruit.

I'm not entirely opposed to that but their cap hit most certainly is.

Given that a slightly-above-average defenceman just got $5.5 mil/yr and it was considered a bargain, I think someone will take two players for $14 mil/yr for the next 3 seasons who just combined for 150 pts. Even if their production dips to the 100-120 range by the end of their contracts, they'll still have a couple good seasons on the right teams and for a team on the edge (Florida? Nashville?) or teams that may be going stale with the current crop (St. Louis? Detroit? Montreal?) they might be perfect fits.

After all the good work that Linden and Benning did to re-build the Canucks brand after Gillis and Torts put it in the toilet, I think the brand would take a big hit if you traded the Sedins away. It might make sense from a hockey perspective, but I just don't see it happening. Best bet for Vancouver is to hope that guys like Horvat, Virtanen, Cassels, and Baertschi are ready to step in when the Sedins step away.

the sedins are probably gonna be canuck lifers ... the canucks NEED some of their youth to start stepping up and complementing the sedins

I just dont see another team pulling the trigger on a trade for 2 guys at $14 shmill and giving up anything of value to the canucks and if first rounders is the return that doesnt help ... the team the sedins go to will be virtually guaranteed of a playoff spot

theres alot of other dead weight the canucks can get rid of that they dont have the stomach (it seems) to pull the trigger on

... now ... if the canucks hadnt spent 6 shmill on Ryan Miller ... maybe they would have had the cap space to improve their top 6

I think some of the teams I named would give up more than just a first rounder, if they're convinced the Sedins have 2-3 top-flight years left in them. Teams just aren't giving up that kind of production and the FA class is garbage.

Im not sure about that ... I think alot of the ticket buying public are ambivalent towards the sedins and what they mean to the franchise

/on that note ... strangely enough Ive seen/heard sth's who are doing their seat selections for next season say there are alot fewer seats available in comparison to last year :noidea:

Would your Flames not have been better off trading Iginla in 2010 instead of 2013? Canucks hold onto the Sedins for a few more years and the youngsters begin to take over, how much better are they with another piece or two to complement the guys you named?

It's a business. The successful GMs have the balls to make moves like this. Yzerman is a fucking perfect example - compare the Sedins to Marty and Vinny. You think the Lightning fan gives a damn about those two today?

I would do the sedin deal to nashville for forsberg and weber

The biggest mistakes made were some bad trades/acquisitions made by Dutter when he was GM of the Flames. I didn't like the Ference trade to Boston at the time and no need to revisit the Phaneuf trade to Toronto (I didn't have a problem with trading away Phaneuf, it's just that the timing and return was horrible). The funny thing is the one player who delayed the rebuild the most is Kipper, he helped the Flames win games they had no business winning and probably gave the impression to management that the team was better than they really were.

the problem in all this discussion and the reason why everything here is just a moot point is the sedins have a no trade clause and i dont really see them giving up on the team like Ryan Kesler did :ohwell:

so it becomes a problem of timing ... you have to hope the young players step up and become the go to guys in the top 6 in the remaining time the sedins have here

Benning is going to need to be shrewd and make moves to get young and more skilled NOW ... hes been trying to do that by acquiring the "lost generation guys" ... 22 to 25 year olds

AND hes got to stop submarine-ing the plan by doing stupid deals like the Ryan Miller one (and sbisa ... and Dorsett (maybe) )

/ FUCK! lol

Doubt very much you ever see the Sedins playing anywhere else but Vancouver.

Thank you. Personally I was surprised at this deal. Well, surprised at the consensus "bargain" view. If Petry at $5.5 is a bargain, then Dion at $7 is not totally ridiculous. Overpaid, sure, but not totally ridiculous.

Which I recall was the point you have made several times. Inflation will make the Phaneuf contract entirely moveable within a year or two (so, now). And no, TOR will not have to take back a cripple or give up #1 picks to move the contract. Or take back guys like Weiss.

Honestly, looking at the Habs defense I would not be surprised at all if the team blocks 4100 shots next season.

I think everything about Petry's move to a better team bodes well for the prospects of outside interest in Phaneuf. Even if the Leafs have to eat a mil, they'll still wind up with something in return.

Thing is, to get good guys now, wouldn't he have to move at least one of the better younger guys?
