Does anyone realize that the NBA owns the controlling interest in the WNBA? Over 60 percent.

It is. Total deal is worth 2.2 billion. On face value it should cover their annual losses plus.
until these women want salaries 5 times higher than what they are currently making. Early reports are they want salaries at 50% of leagues total revenue, whish is asinine on its face. But when has that ever stopped women from demanding it ie. womens national soccer team

of course they want more money. When you have a rookie, Angel Reese making less than $80K a year, but living in a $8000/month luxury apartment.

And the thing is the NBA is going to want to show they are sharing the wealth with women. The NBA owns the WNBA though, they can do what they want.

Sure, but there needs to be a bit of a reality check. The league would likely be dead if not for the NBA's subsidies. Striking for raises when your league does not yet have secure financials is shooting yourself in the foot.

And the NBA will make that clear. Like I have said though, the NBA is going to want to show they are treating women well. I don’t care how they spend their money, but at some point in all these sports someone better start thinking a bit more about the fans, they are paying all the bills.

Not to mention wage demands would push that $40M per upwards.
Except it's not $200 mil over 11 years, it's $200 mil per year for 11 years ($2.2 billion total). The players absolutely should get some of that.

They just secured the financials, thanks to the Caitlin Clark phenomenon.

How does the NBA subsidizing the WNBA hurt the fans?

My comment was in regard to the mentioned increasing costs associated with going to games in all sports. It was basically an adder on top of me saying I don’t care if the nba wants to lose money on certain things.

I would think the WNBA costs far less to attend games than major men's sports so the fans benefit there.

The TV rights deal is 2.2 BILLION over 11 years. Which works out to an additional 200M per year in revenue for the league.

The WNBA is losing 40M this year. Not even factoring any increase in salaries, let's allot for an additional 20% increase in those spending figures(marketing, advertisment, etc). If we factor in 50M in losses, off the top of the 200M, we have 150M left over. NBA and other investors own 60% of the league, so let's take 90M off the table. That leaves 60M in surplus revenue over last year without any increase in merchandise, ticket sales, etc.

NBA/CBA split is 51/49. To be conservative let's say the new CBA for the WNBA is 60/40 in favor of the WNBA. That means of the 200M, the WNBA players would receive only 24M. That's approximately 1.8M to each team in increased cap. Their current cap is 1.46M.

So the salaries would definitely increase, but not exponentially. But it's enough to start to get into a respectable range or salary. Average salary jumps from $121,666 to $271,666.

So this absolutely shows justification for player salary increases....it will just not be near the level that the WNBA players think it should be.

Another chance to relay one of my favorite Norm McDonald bits from SNL:

Today the WNBA announced some rule changes to help bring excitement to the league. First, they will be moving the 3 point line in by 6 inches. They will also expand the active game rosters from 12 to 15 players. And finally they will be replacing all the women with guys.

(audience groans)

Oh you didn’t like that one? Well what if I told you a woman wrote that joke?

(audience laughs)

Nah I’m just kidding, we don’t hire women here

(huge laugh)
I miss Norm. Dont find comedians like that any more.

Too many Kevin Hart types now that just jump around and curse.

The movement/agenda behind the WNBA is to convince sports fans that they’re missing out on something great and that the sport is as mainstream as any in the U.S. It is a social vehicle as much as anything.

The overhyped, over saturated media discussion of the WNBA is forced and nowhere near as craved as they are implying it is.

That said, Caitlin Clark in a sense is being exploited, but came along at the white time.
