I just don't get how we can be up against it budget-wise yet though. When I crunched the numbers a few weeks back it looked like we only had about $133 million spent for next year and the talk has been that they would be willing to spend $160 million plus.

Yes, it’s clear that Seattle is framing a Felix/Robbie/Nellie window with its winter work, and Houston doesn’t go with Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann, where they are in their careers, unless they’re in win-now mode, as they should be.
As should Texas, with Beltre and Cole Hamels still at their peak, and Yu Darvish and Lucroy entering contract years.
So, yeah, go get Napoli. Leverage the talks by kicking Trumbo’s tires.
Or aim to get a little more left-handed and consider Pedro Alvarez, as long as Jeff Banister thinks well of their years together in Pittsburgh. Not a huge fan myself, nor of Luis Valbuena, nor Adam Lind and his massive 2016 dropoff, but OK.
Michael Saunders? Hmm.
Or, you know, Gallo or Profar, who were each borderline-untouchable not long ago, who hit from the left side, and who are still just 23. Let’s find out.
Or, maybe, sit tight and see — as guys like Steve Pearce and Rajai Davis and Trevor Plouffe and Colby Rasmus come off the board and take up payroll and roster spots elsewhere — how far Napoli and Trumbo’s ask drops, as the club did with Ian Desmond a year ago (and 48 days later on the calendar).
Maybe just stay patient on Napoli and Trumbo, each coming off a career year in home runs and RBI — especially Napoli, whom I wouldn’t mind Gallo spending a whole lot of time around — as the music gets closer to stopping and the available chairs, meanwhile, continue to drop in number, perhaps along with the player’s demands.
I don't think we are done adding players. But we picked up Desmond late. Could happen again

In his latest notes column, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports provides some new twists in the ongoing saga between Mark Trumbo and the Orioles. Trumbo reportedly rejected a four-year proposal worth more than $50MM earlier this offseason, and Rosenthal hears that he recently asked Baltimore for a three-year deal worth about $50MM. Since that request, Trumbo’s camp has indicated a willingness to take an offer between $40-50MM over three years, he continues. As Rosenthal notes, Trumbo does have interest elsewhere. But, the Rockies would have to move an outfielder and shift Ian Desmond off of first base to facilitate a signing, while the Rangers are currently engaged with Mike Napoli and have suggested on multiple occasions this winter that major free-agent signings aren’t in the cards due to financial reasons.
Don't really get it myself, but it appears they aren't going to spend much this season. Damn do we need oil to get back up over $100 a barrel?

I'm with ya 100% on this "budget quagmire" we seem to be in.
I had hoped, actually make that expected, the budget to increase since the new park was approved.
