What do you guys think Edwin Diaz would get in a trade? He's objectively one of the best closers in baseball right now, only 24 years old and doesn't hit free agency until 2023.
Andrew Miller got a huge haul when the Yankees traded him to the Indians and he was much older and didn't have the cheap financial commitment that Diaz has. The Yankees landed Clint Frazier (#27 prospect overall) and Justus Sheffield (#81 overall) at the time of the trade.
My thoughts on the Indians overpaying aside, if that is the bench mark for an elite closer, I'd imagine the Mariners could land a lot more for Diaz given his age and his controllability.
To me this just rehashes the idea of Paxton as well. Neither one of them are as valuable in the off-season. In the off-season there is no real bidding war for players like either of the two. The Mariners need part of the season the play out to have surprise teams like the A’s last year to build a market and then have a team like the Astros having a massive need. Not every team is like the 2018 Mariners where they go into the season with a massive weakness, generally weaknesses are created by injury (Machado to the Dodgers) or massively underperforming in an area like the Indians a few year back.
Just looking at the Marlins “rebuild” they announced the world they were trading everyone and dealt almost every one in the off season as opposed to the Yankees who sold everyone off at the deadline. Hindsight is 20/20 but had the Mariners sold at the deadline last year they would have a top 10 farm system this year with the needs last year.
