The Phillies do that they might become the favorites in the NL. I figure they get Harper plus Kuechel.

I think you're right. Even if they get Manny plus Harp, they still will get Kuechel.

I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if Machado signed one year with the Dodgers for around $30MM and then tested free agency again next year.

The Reds are making a really serious push for third place in the division.

Holy overpayment.

I figured a team like sd was trying to get him to rehab his value and flip him at the deadline for more.

But that would require a big comeback for the reds to get more.

Shed Long is 23 and hasn't played above AA. He's been a lotto ticket for the Reds. They still have Scooter at 2B with Senzel or India figuring to be the future of the position.

Long might not be a 2nd baseman much longer either, and his bat might not profile as well in the outfield.

I was commenting when Stephenson was also in the deal.

The pick and Stephenson is a lot. Keeping one of them was essential imo.

Royals signed INF/OF Whit Merrifield to a four-year, $16.25 million extension.

The deal includes a $2.75 million club option for 2023 with a $750,000 buyout. The Royals have now bought out one pre-arbitration season and all three of his arbitration-eligible seasons. It has the potential to be a bargain for the Royals. Merrifield turned 30 earlier this month and batted .304/.367/.438 with 12 homers and an MLB-best 45 steals in 2018.

Hot Stove used to be fun before the MLB scribes turned into sophomoric fools who gleaned rosters and dreamed up 'does he fit'? scenarios for every team named NYY, Boston or LAD.

Nobody does any real research now. All we have as fans is the same ridiculous drivel every day from some experts on the sports talk stations.

Pitchers & Catchers report in less than 2 weeks in some camps.

And 4 of the top 5 FA (according to MLBTR) are unsigned.

Crazy.

It is crazy. Something has to be done someway to get players signed quicker. Harper and Machado shouldn't be still out there going into February.

1) get rid of the tax

2) if not 1, add a floor of at least 130m

3) let players reach Fa sooner

Two-sided knife, I suppose. Most of us wouldn't want to be managed by the rules but in the case of a business model that depends on fan investment (tickets, merchandise) it seems like they'd want their people in place sooner than the last 20 days or so before people have to make plans on visiting spring training.

Still, it's about a lot of money for the players and their agents. One could recommend a deadline to sign or return to the team that you left. Dunno how that would ever be fair for anybody.

He's a good 1. The Mets would be wise to sign Gio.
