MLB Rumor Central: Interest building in Yunel Escobar?

Mets hold workout for Cuban infielder Gourriel

Steven Matz has a bone spur in the pitching elbow. He can pitch through it health-wise, but the question is can he pitch effectively....The Mets are not sure Steven Matz will make Wednesday's start. He has been examined by a doctor and there is no structural damage, but he has been uncomfortable.

Juan Lagares will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday. Jose Reyes also will be with the club...Jose Reyes will move to Double-A Binghamton after Monday's game with the Brooklyn Cyclones, manager Terry Collins said.

Zack Wheeler played catch at 90 feet on Monday in Port St. Lucie for the first time since receiving a cortisone injection last week. He reported no difficulty, assistant GM John Ricco said.

Morning Briefing: Now you can panic!

Columnist David Lennon * in Newsday writes about the Mets' medical obfuscation: "The Mets snowed us for a while with the clean MRIs and repeated claims of ‘no structural damage' each time a pitcher emerges from that clanging metal tube. But they can't fool themselves. When members of your rotation are showing up at the doctor's office more often than pharmaceutical reps, it's a serious problem. And repeatedly saying that Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz are merely dealing with ‘discomfort' is no longer an acceptable medical diagnosis."

*Lennon: Once-superhero rotation turns fragile

Steven Matz will stay in the rotation, but will instead pitch on Thursday at Citi Field. Sandy Alderson said the spur at the back of the elbow cannot cause further damage. It's just a discomfort threshold. The spur will have to be surgically removed, but may wait until end of the season.

The Mets will not need to regularly skip Steven Matz or otherwise give him extra rest. The Mets may go to a six-man rotation at some point. Surgery would sideline Matz for three months.

Sandy Alderson acknowledged Noah Syndergaard has a small spur in the back of elbow. "It's really insignificant," Alderson said. He will continue to pitch on turn.
Sandy Alderson said Noah Syndergaard's small bone spur will not need to be removed after the season. Ninety percent of the pitchers have something similar, Alderson estimated.

Sandy Alderson estimated Lucas Duda is still two weeks from baseball activity outdoors. Duda is on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his lower back.

Jose Reyes will work strictly at third base in the minors before being promoted. The outfield and other exposure will only come once he joins the Mets.

Sandy Alderson said the Mets are "evaluating where we are" with respect to making an offer on Yulieski Gourriel. He took BP from coaches, took grounders at third and second base on Monday in Port St. Lucie. The agent would like a deal in the next week or two weeks but has multiple other showcases before committing. Having Jose Reyes doesn't really affect interest in Gourriel.
Sandy Alderson predicted Yulieski Gourriel will take about a month to be ready to compete in the majors.

Wow....our "manager" is a fucking genius....:tsk:

Terry Collins acknowledged the Mets need to win on Wednesday night and avoid a sweep in D.C. He noted it would put a better taste in the team's mouth after a subpar road trip. It would mean trailing by four games instead of six games. And, Collins noted, the Mets will return home to face the Cubs for four games. And that will be no picnic.

Ugghhh

I just wish he and his coaching staff are shown the door before the 2nd half of the season begins.

Grandy scratched....

WASHINGTON -- New York Mets right fielder Curtis Granderson has been scratched from Wednesday's game against the Washington Nationals because of what manager Terry Collins has described as a mild right calf strain.

Granderson sat out Sunday in Atlanta. He then departed Tuesday's game at Nationals Park after an 85-minute rain delay in the fourth inning because he could not get the calf loose.

He originally was listed in Wednesday's lineup, but was pulled after the Mets took batting practice.

Brandon Nimmo was then added to the lineup in left field, with Alejandro De Aza sliding over to right field.
