He wasn't my choice either, but adding talent works. I am a firm believer in that...Eh, I’ll put my hand up. I was completely against signing him.
That was my justification along with him sucking in the field. So he didn’t “fit” plus zero chance he was going to sign with Seattle when on paper he would’ve gotten 10 AB’s a weekHe wasn't my choice either, but adding talent works. I am a firm believer in that...
And I didn't want him only because I think we are top heavy with left-handers.
And would offer him 10 cents on the dollar. That was my justification along with him sucking in the field. So he didn’t “fit” plus zero chance he was going to sign with Seattle when on paper he would’ve gotten 10 AB’s a week
But even if Seattle offered him the same deal do you think he would’ve signed? He isn’t at the point in his career where he just wants to cash a check and sit on the bench. Nor does he fit the model of “mentor” at least IMO. Mentors are great, utility players are great, but a Chone Figgins where they aren’t happy with how they are being used can be cancerous especially with a young team. And would offer him 10 cents on the dollar.
First off, comparing anyone to Chone Figgins is just wrong. He was one of a kind and that kind isn't something we want. I would not have signed him to sit him. I still don't get anyones perspective that we had such great outfielders that signing a vet would block them or cause us to sit the vet? If he hit here like has has been hitting in Washington, then he would play daily and given a section of his own at T-Whatever. Hell, there might have been monthly parades for him at this rate. But even if Seattle offered him the same deal do you think he would’ve signed? Ok, Figgins may have been a bad or extreme example. It isn’t “blocking”. He would not have been a starter, being better is irrelevant. He wasn’t going to start over White, France or Haniger. They could have signed him had Jerry not been married to 2B being a filled position.First off, comparing anyone to Chone Figgins is just wrong. Sign veteran talent, make young punks force their way into the lineup, find a place for each guy in the lineup that is hitting regardless of positioning or experience level. Eventually have enough talent where you can use talented offensive player who is also talented defensive player on a daily basis.
I thought we were talking about Schwarber? He is a LF and we had nobody inked in for that spot coming into spring. Oh well, we didn't sign him, anyone else, and may never sign a real free agent in my lifetime.Ok, Figgins may have been a bad or extreme example. It isn’t “blocking”. I was talking about Schwaber. He could have been the DH for the Mariners if Jerry was more open to having France play 2B or if Seager was willing to move to 2B. There isn’t a single major league free agent that would’ve signed up to play LF for the Mariners this year. You may call it blocking, I call it seat warming and he isn’t at that point in his career yet. Only position that is being blocked is 2B, and I cannot for the life of me understand why. No 2B prospects, no prospects who could project as a 2B.I thought we were talking about Schwarber? He is a LF and we had nobody inked in for that spot coming into spring. one of the funnier days of the yearTomorrow is Bobby Bonilla Day, when the retired baseball player will collect a $1.2 million check from the New York Mets as he has and will continue to do so every July 1 from 2011 through 2035 thanks to a buyout deal with the franchise
Ya I have been following this a little. I have mixed feelings on which is the truth. Sad story either way.Things arent trending well with this story.
