Dont get me wrong. It is the right call. Doesnt mean it is a good rule.

I would love to go back to the days when a defender can punish the QB too. But it isnt going to happen.
I'd be in favor of going back to that initial hit to the shoulder pad being legal... That 'turtling' is always going to result in helmet to helmet contact.

This is biggest reason why fans think NFL refs aren't very good.

That is an OBVIOUS helmet to helmet hit that should be called every time yet you have people come in here and complain about it. A defender leading with a crown of his helmet to make a tackle who creates helmet to helmet contact. EXACTLY the play that refs this year have been told by the league to pay special attention to it.

Fans are wrong WAY more often than NFL officials are. Way more. And NFL officials have to make the call in a split second while NFL fans get the benefit of replay and time. And NFL officials still get right more often than most fans.

NFL referees are fantastic. It's unbelievable how many plays they get right the first time in real time. Most fans need to go volunteer to ref a high school game and then come back here and see what they have to say about NFL refs. And then to make it even more interesting, they should get a replay of each call that they made slowed down to frame by frame and taken from nearly each conceivable angle and then get to talk to a biased fans who only see what they want to see.

Are NFL officials perfect? Of course not. But they really are unbelievably good at what they do 99.9% of the time.

NFL refs dont miss more calls than they used to.....NFL fans have just become a lot bigger bitches.
The receiver gets 2 feet down but doesn't complete a football move. He doesn't have time to defend himself. I don't think there's a crown of the helmet argument or blame for the receiver trying to duck. The onus is on the defender to avoid contact to the receiver's head and neck area. The hit would be legal half a second later, but as it is the hit is early. The refs are told that if there's a doubt it's a penalty.

I don't think fans bitch more. I think the rules are more complex and tv is better at showing the mistakes. I think there are more mistakes and I hate that some refs wait for the play to finish before deciding whether to throw the flag.

Garoppolo wasn't in the act of throwing and thus wasn't defenseless. He was a ball-carrier and was subject to normal playing conditions. Helmet to helmet contact isn't automatically illegal. Fitzpatrick kept his eyes on the horizon, avoided any launching, and played with his hands ahead of his shoulders. It was textbook stuff. The refs had to make a judgement whether the helmet contact was 'forcible contact'. TV rules analyst Terry McAulay said that in his opinion the refs' judgement was wrong. I agreed with McAulay.

Bijan drops his head and stops his feet. A very poor and dangerous decision but he doesn’t lead with the crown of the helmet. Stick to soccer. You don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.

Hmmm didn't think of it this way... Thought never occurred to me about the 'act of throwing' other than to defend Minkah about what his thought process was for going higher

I did think he had his face up, definitely didn't lead with the crown of his helmet. But still a helmet to helmet hit. Like you said not dirty but that call could have gone either way. That wasn't the only ref that would have called it, but it definitely wasn't blatant either.

I'm fine with that grey area, especially if the refs are consistent and calling it for both teams. Regardless I don't think it was a good example for this thread or anything replay worthy.

This isn’t a bang bang nano second reaction play. It was flagged because the defender has the opportunity to slide the head to the left or right of contact as he engages and he goes head on. It’s really just that simple. The head on collisions in this way of open field tackling is part of what they’re trying to legislate out of the game. It’s a safety issue for both players. We can squabble about the current burden being placed on the defender to be the one ti adjust but that’s the way it’s been legislated. Truth be told, a head on head collision puts both players in jeopardy. I saw a poor high school kid paralyzed because he led with his head. He took the brunt of the contact and severed his spine.

The defender had his head up and it was below chest level of the offensive player who then lowered his head into the defender crown first. If anything the penalty should have been on the offense. They used to call that penalty but seem to have stopped now.

Stop being a douche.

bottom line. It was a horribly stupid call.
If anyone used the crown of the helmet was the offensive player.
If the defensive guy used his crown to a face mask a fine would be implemented. Other way around. Nothing (but a free 1st down)
Fact the offensive player lost his helmet made the blind refs react.
The defender did nothing wrong.

The end.

Am I the only one hear the ref stop announcing his call to tell a player he is talking to America in week 2?

Not really weighing in on yhe thread subject, just thought it was hilarious

It was pretty funny. Gotta give the ref props for the quick comeback. The broadcast crew commented on it too.

Also the reason why I dont want refs being shown on TV announcing penalties. Too tempting to call extra marginal penalties so they can get their 15 minutes of fame.

Refs prove me right again by allowing a play after the clock ran down to all zeros at the end of Q3. And no, it is not like the play clock wher they get an extra second to get the play off (which is actually retarded).

Even the frigging shitty NBA has a buzzer that goes off when time runs out. Just give the ref a button to push when the ball is snapped and if he does not push it in time the buzzer goes off and the play is dead. Simple.
