I love it how it is a thread about how refs suck because of the calls they make in real time in a split second at field level and then the thread devolves into 14 pages of people arguing over videos and pictures from the press box angle of what is and isn't a penalty.

I could give anyone in here $5 billion to make NFL officiating better and to hire different referees. And you would accomplish nothing with it, make it worse and this thread would just continue and continue to grow.

Wrong. I would train them to make the right calls and be a minimal distruption to game flow and I would cyborg them where possible.

How does this count as roughing the passer? It doesn’t appear the helmet actually makes contact and if so at the end is incidental. It’s a sack and not a pass, if that matters. I know he‘s not a runner yet.

I guess my point was...I see the still and see that in the clip...but I feel like the still taken was a split second AFTER the initial crown of the helmet hit.

Again - I don't have a dog either way...and I do agree...the rules are going counter to NFL nature and is getting out of hand.
2022:
RULE 12.
ARTICLE 10. USE OF THE HELMET. It is a foul if a player lowers his head and makes forcible contact with his helmet against an opponent.
Penalty: Loss of 15 yards. If the foul is by the defense, it is also an automatic first down. The player may be disqualified.

There's no longer any argument about a "crown of the helmet" distinction or mitigation if another body part makes contact first. What Ricard did would have been a penalty and a fine in 2013. The safety requirement for play has been expanded upon twice since then. It's not about whether people agree with the rule or not. Under the 2022 rule this foul was egregious. Trying to argue that this wasn't is only for those who have gone full retard.

It levels out in the end for all teams.

Fans are bitching about the absurd amount of flags when refs warm up and start calling everything. Some calls are spot on. Others are bad, and the “head” ref from a booth explains, which is good. But sometimes the booth is brown nosing what really happened.

Less intervention by the refs is what most fans are asking for.

It's a really difficult line. The refs didn't call WR offside at all on normal downs in the Dolphins @ Eagles game last weekend but they called every marginal OL offside on short yardage downs in the Rams @ Packers game this weekend. No-one wants flags thrown on every down for innocuous things but if they only call it when the team has a big play it looks like steering.

Could be that one of the biggest issues overall is that the Refs are not full time. I think there is a lot of training that could go on in the off-season if guys were treated as full-time NFL employees. It wouldn't solve all the issues, but getting all the refs together and doing training together, and going through off-season drills together would likely go a long, long way to helping mitigate one of the biggest issues in officiating - the large disparity between crews in how games are called....

Make the officials full time NFL employees, with a full off-season of training and getting officials all together in one spot for a month, or two, leading up to the season and I'd wager a decent amount we'd see a lot smoother transition between crews in-season.

Just let the players play works for me. The less game stoppage the better.

What about the calls they still miss after looking at replay? some are easy and some are not. It's funny that some of these tough to judge calls aren't even reviewed. Really makes no sense

I was okay with the original flag but I had a problem with New York calling in and ejecting him. It was a bad hit but I don't believe there was any intent there. He just took his eyes off his target when he lowered his head and it ended badly. By the letter of the rule, justified call on the field but the ejection was unnecessary imo.

Anyone else getting sick of the refs handing the eagles games every week. Same shit again this week. 3 times as many penalties on the opponents then on the eagles. Slay tackled a WR on one play about 3 seconds before the ball got there and no penalty.

NFL is a joke. Eagles and Chiefs are in the SB again guaranteed. Sorry to disappoint everyone else but we are just playing for kicks this season. Noone else will be allowed to win.

I have already debunked this earlier. Look at the still shot again. His head was up when he made contact.

The eagles game was atrocious. They basically flagged the bills every 3rd play for whatever. At least 3 ghost PI calls, the missed horse collar on Allen and then to call intentional grounding with an RB 5 yards in front of him. Missed PI calls on eagles CBs to add insult to injury.
