Said on NBC tonight that NFL very likely to overturn in 2013 challenge-flag rule that hurt Detroit today. "Too onerous," lg source told me.

Good. That rule is ridiculous, especially after what happened today.

That's ridiculous - the rule needs to be changed before this Sunday's games - Hell, it should have been overturned the moment it was called and changed before the end of the Detroit game!

It's one of the dumbest rules I've ever heard. It just makes no sense. Penalizing the team is fine. Eliminating the review is just plain dumb.

I didn't see the game, was this an issue of the TD being ruled and then after way too much time going by the refs still hadn't decided to review it?? If that is the case then I can understand Schwartz ignoring the rule and trying to throw the flag, because if the booth guy is being a punk and not doing his job the coach can't just sit there like an idiot and not do something.

I gotta say, its kinda funny though that Schwartz talked shit to Harbaugh over getting this penalty a year ago, and then went and screwed himself by doing the same thing. Although with that said, after Harbaugh did it the refs still reviewed the play so that would send a mixed message and maybe Schwartz thought he'd rather take the penalty than give up the TD uncontested.

Is Schwartz the stupidest head coach in the league or what?

So they would review the play no matter what because it was a scoring play, but since a challenge flag was thrown, they no longer review it? As far as I am concerned, the play yesterday was just as bad as the Seahawks/Packers game. The replacement refs probably enjoyed a nice round for that one.

Isn't this more of the matter that the rule is the problem, not the refs?

The seahawks/pack game was a bad ref's decision.

Didn't Harbaugh use that as an extra timeout sort of in the Detroit game last year? All I remember is people saying that he knew the rules and had no consequences - didn't even lose a timeout and the penalty on the kickoff did nothing. Someone suggested that it seemed unfair - in Harbaugh's favor - and thus the rule could be changed because "why wouldn't coaches exploit this?" And now, it hurts a coach. So I wonder if they will change the rule but also make it punish a coach like Harbaugh - say if you try to challenge an unchallengable play, you lose the challenge or the challenge and a timeout, penalty included too or not.

No, I am saying that they never blew the whistle dead. The guy's knee was completely on the ground and so was his entire arm down to the elbow. I get that it happens fats, but when your job is to see these things (and it wasn't as if he was in a pile) then that is a mistake you can't make.
