How would they define what a flagrant or intentional DPI would be? Incidental contact (while subjective) already goes unflagged. So currently, it seems they already consider any DPI to be intentional.

I would say that if the foul was committed to prevent a unimpeded player from making a play that would likely lead to a TD, that would be a spot foul.

As an example of different situations.

1. An arm bar would be a 15 yard penalty.
2. Impeding a player on an underthrown ball would be a 15 yard penalty.
3. Tripping a player that has clearly beat the receiver would be a spot foul or 15 yards, whichever was greater.

That won't work at all. In full speed, it will be hard to tell if it was intentional or not.

I don't like judgement calls. Black and white at least eliminates some of the questionable calls.

Not only no, but FUCK NO!

If you want to see PI calls drastically increase, this rule change is for you.

NFL VP: Changing PI to 15-yard penalty a possibility - NFL.com

One of many possible changes to the rules that are being consider.

Personally I strongly support changing the DPI penalty from a spot foul to a 15 yard penalty EXCEPT in the cases of intentional fouls which would remain spot fouls.

I'm for your version. It's a way to slightly counterbalance some of the insane increase in offense we've seen in the last decade. It would definitely add to the "controversial call" total, but I think there's usually a clear distinction between someone taking a guy down because he was burned and just everyday pass interference. It would actually be a good balance between the pros who are sometimes too severe in their enforcement and college who are sometimes too light.

I'd have to give a thumbs down to this. Lets try not to have more judgement calls.

We are getting enough of the judgement calls as it is.

I am not so quick to change rules. I still wish they kept the "tuck rule"

Keep it a spot foul, but let PI calls longer than ten or fifteen yards be eligible for a coaches challenge.

Just leave PI the way it is. The challenges should change. Give each team three challenges and let them challenge whatever they want.

I am for it. 15 yds and an automatic 1st down. I like the idea of a blatant PI being a spot foul, but the Refs have a hard time as it calling PI correctly, lets not add more thinking to their game. IF they do make obvious PI a spot foul, it needs to be reviewed to make sure they got it right. Nothing worse in this game like a QB who just tosses it up, there is not shot in hell he will catch it, but they call PI. Ball on the 1 yard line.....fuck that....and no more automatic 1st downs on certain 5 yard penalties. If the 5 yards gets you that 1st down, then fine. 3rd and 9, you get a 5 yard penalty and automatic first down...come on.

Defiantly don't like "judgement calls". Any rule changes should avoid ambiguity from the refs.

Bout dam time the NFL looked at this.... I"m all for it ... I get sick of seeing offenses get bailed out on some hail marry pass where a tick tack PI call hands the O yards...

I get that, but incidental pass interference calls going for 60 yards is a problem, too.

When it's deemed as incidental contact it already goes uncalled. And a defender doesn't need to tackle the receiver for it to be a flagrant interference. When you're running by as fast as you can, even subtle grabs of pushes can effectively impede the receivers path to the ball. I would expect more PI on down field passes if they change this.

I don't know. On the one hand you don't want to see a team get 40+ yards on a weak call, but on the other you don't want to see db's tackle guys when they know they're burnt because giving up 15 yards is a lot better than giving up a TD. And the refs might get more flag happy than they already are if it's 15 instead of a spot foul.
