There is no legitimate downside to expansion. It is past time.

Agree. What I find funny is that the problems with a 4 team playoff were so easy to see...and they went with it anyway.

I also like 8. 12 will devalue the conference championship games. If two teams walk into a championship game ranked 3 and 5. The result doesn’t matter for much outside of seeding. Both teams are likely to get into the playoff. I also read that they’re giving autobids to the 6 highest rated conference champs. That could also be a problem. That window should be capped at 16 in the rankings. The 23rd ranked team in the nation shouldn’t get a bid because they won a conference that only produced one ranked team.

See, that is a good thing.

The conference championship won’t be devalued because the teams care about winning it.

What sucks is when power conference champs don’t get to play, or when there are 2-3 great teams from a single conference or that really good undefeated non power school.

12 lets all those teams get in AND provides an advantage for the top seeds.

Win win.

I think you can accomplish the same thing with:
8 team playoff
Auto bids for 5 power conference champs
2 at large bids from power 5
1 highest ranked small conference champion as long as they finish top 12 in the rankings. If they finish outside of 12 an extra at large is at play for a P5 non/conference champion.

One point we agree on is that expansion is what we should all be looking for. 4 is not enough.

8 is better than 4 for sure.

I guess what I like best about 12 is the bye. Maybe 10 as a compromise? Byes for top 2 seeds?

your concern is why have 12. Seeding would be huge. wouldn't 3 and 5 be fighting to remain top 4 and get the bye?

I've only heard autobids for all P5 champs and highest ranked G5 team (I would expect there to be minimum....maybe top 15 or better?).

I saw, I believe, Cowherd talking about it this morning. The committee or whatever it was that was looking into it is said to have recommended a 12 team playoff.

Personally, I think 8 is plenty...but I'm never one to complain about more football. lol
I once thought 8 was a must. after seeing it at 4 I could understand keeping it there. No doubt a lot on these kids to have to win another game after already going through 2 tough games. But I can see the logic behind 12. (and 8 sounds good, too)..and like you, wont complain about more good games.

while I do see the merit in a 12 team CFP, I'd be down with yours. 12 or 8 I'd love to see first round at home of top 4 seeds in that round. That should also make all teams keep fighting until the end to earn a home game.

At 10 you'd need to allow the top 6 to get byes if my math is correct. 6 teams in would mean 2 byes. sorry for those who thought there'd be no math

8 would have only left 2 at large spots for the power 5 and they don’t want that. I think it will be cool, but I’m very surprised they are being so proactive. Of course we know why. $$$

I liked 8 because it was easy to set up. Auto bids for the 5 conference champs and 3 at large berths. But I'm good with 12. Like I said, more football is a good thing. lol

Yeah, the only thing that surprises me, is that it took them so long to figure out how much money a playoff would make. I'm sure more money is also the reason they went straight to 12 without trying 6 or 8 first.

My guess is they did 12 because 4 byes is something teams will fight for all season. In addition, teams will continue fighting to be the home team in round 1 as opposed to having to play a true road game.

I guess they don't count guys that were already out before being drafted? Michael Sam wasn't that long ago, drafted by the Rams, cut just after preseason and signed to the Cowboys practice squad. I suppose if they want to quibble, he wasn't on the 53.
