Me too.

USC and UCLA joining Big came out of nowhere....
It’s only out of nowhere if you haven’t been paying attention. This is just the next step in an incremental change that’s been taking place since the B12 was raided and the Big East disbanded as a football conference.

I think the ''out of nowhere'' is that they went to a different conference. I can't speak to UCLA, but all of the speculation around USC was that, if they left the pac, it would be to go independent for football.

That was always a pipe dream. USC couldn’t make that work financially unless the goal would be to rip into the endowment to pay for the pleasure of being independent. All of their other sports teams would lose a home. ND is an entity that actually does have a national fan base from coast to coast and even they can’t make independence in its truest form work any more. ND says they’re independent but they’re really not. They’re contractually obligated to play almost half the schedule vs the ACC.

Not really. Money isn't a big issue for USC and the remaining sports would have remained in the pac. And who said anything about other sports? I said ''independent for football''.

I actually have been paying attention.....but adding 2 WC teams is pretty bizarre.

Why do you think the P12 would just bend over like that? The P12 has two legit football entities in USC and Oregon (because of the Nike money). All of the money in college sports is football. So what you’re projecting is that USC would essentially cut their financial legs out from under them AND continue to allow their other major sports to remain in the P12? I don’t see that as a viable projection. In your scenario, USC goes independent and like a woman scorned P12 gets petty and kicks USC’s other programs to the curb.

Regions don’t matter anymore. In fact, it all makes sense when you think about it. The reason mega conferences work is because they get so large that they need to break into pods. If you expand coast to coast you create viability in your pods as regional entities.

Not when you look at the money.

For USC and UCLA it means $100 million in tv revenue vs. $30 million from the pac. It also expands their recruiting footprint. For the B1G, they get the 2nd biggest tv market in the country.

True, I was talking about the geography of it all.

The Bowl games are going to be all fucked.
Even more so when the playoff expands to 8-12 teams. We will still have bowl games but that will be mostly for guys like us who will wake up on December 27th and be like hey! there’s three games to gamble today and we don’t give a fuck who is playing.

I will credit @dtgold88 who said it first here:
College football is going to become a quasi NFC v AFC set up with the B10 v SEC.

Because for them, keeping part of USC is better than losing them entirely. It also keeps the potential that the football team may eventually return to the conference. From what was reported, part of the reason the pac ended up having any kind of football season in 2020, was USC threatening to go independent.

If I remember what I read correctly, USC isn't going to the B1G in all sports. I believe some of the Olympic sports are staying. Not 100% sure on that though.

Yikes. Never realized that the P12 was a cuckold.

True, I was talking about the geography of it all.

Someone else pointed out yesterday that, for football, it won't be a big deal. They only play once a week. So for them, it's really just a few extra hours on a plane

But the basketball and baseball teams, for example, can have 2-3 games in a week, so they'll likely have to get a little creative.

Under Larry Scott, they absolutely were.

That's why their television deals and bowl alliances are the worst of the p5 conferences. He was all about promoting the Olympic sports and either didn't understand or didn't care that football pays for all of those sports.

Kliavkoff has managed to fix much of that. But it was going to take years for him to catch the conference up to the others in tv deals and bowl alliances. From a football perspective, the pac has been fighting with 1 hand tied behind it's back.

The pac calls itself the conference of champions because they win all of the sports that no one cares about. lol
