I read that Bagley is 9-20 in his career 48 yards and longer and now you put in the pressure of kicking on the road for an indoor kicker with the pressure of playoff football.

Meanwhile, on 4th and 3 or less the Lions were 15-20 this year.

The coach has made his team in his image and likeness and he knows his team.

Personally? I go for the first and kick the FG on the 2nd. But I haven’t earned one of these prestigious jobs so what I would have personally done doesn’t really matter.

What’s crazy is that we see more 50 yarders made these days than ever before. Lions just have a shitty kicking situation. Maybe that’s by design. Maybe Campbell’s style leads to making a kicker lower priority. Not really sure.

Oh there is no doubt kicking in general is a lot better than it used to be. Guessing our HC went for it a lot more last year than this one because he had a kicker he relied on more this year.....though any time he went the fans cried about it.

I'd argue that he shouldn't have been in the playoffs if his coach had that little faith in him. That said, I'm not sure how much that entered into his decision.

so should they do it because SF had an idea what the play was or do it because a player may not execute? I mean, not crazy a kicker might not execute on a near 50 yarder.

It's always situational, imo. Generally speaking, I'm in favor of a more aggressive approach...but not being aggressive just for the sake of being aggressive which is what those calls felt like.

It's not even necessarily about whether or not the player will or won't make the play. In basketball, a bad shot that goes in, is still a bad shot. So even if they convert, it doesn't mean it was the right thing to do. It can simply be that they "got away with one" for lack of a better term.

The one where they were up 14 I totally understand. But the one where he passed up tying the game in the 4th quarter? Really really stupid no matter what the numbers say. Situation matters A LOT.

It does....but their kicker had been pretty bad on FGs of that distance.

The one where they were up 14 is a little more understandable because if you convert and then go on to score a touchdown, you are darn close to putting the game away. But even then, kicking the field goal still puts you up 3 scores...which is still tough to overcome and keeps the momentum on your side.

Sure but also failing to convert doesn't lose you the game, you're still up 14

Not tying it late means if they score again game over you are down 2 scores. They ended up losing by....3
