Irish getting a lot of attention for not being "relevant"
Depends on what you consider relevant. Traditional program , probably the biggest brand and fan base (the majority with no connection to the program) in college football , lots of fans of other teams don;t like them. If thats what you consider relevant than you got that. Being in the talk for NCs or BCS wins well your team sneaked up ( meaning they werent picked to be at or near the top) last year but other than that it's a big no for more than 20 years.
The Boston celtics come to mind. They were basketball royalty as a franchise but spent the years between Birds departure and the formation of the big three languishing. Were they well known and hated ? Yes. But were they "relevant" in those 20 years? I'd say no.
