My rebuttals would just be,A. Yes and no to me. Not all top prospects are created equal. So if it is a lesser top prospect than yes, but if it is the elite top prospect I would say no. Not for a 3 month rental. I wouldn't do Miller or Woo unless an extension came with it.
B. I would pass. One injury and that would cripple a cheap ass team like Seattle for three years. I guess I look at it this way, he plays on a team similar to Mariners but has one of top players in baseball with him and still has not made any impact on the playoffs in 6 years. Baseball, as we know with Cano, is not a one man show. Or even a two man show with him at two positions. $50? Sure. $100M? Pass.
Valid point worth considering.Honestly I don’t care about production. They need a leader type dude in the clubhouse and especially cause the dude loves Seattle and gets how the fans want to win. Not saying at all saying sign him and make him the everyday DH but it would a token symbol to the fans and honestly just like how Beltre was amazing for Felix, maybe Nelson could be good for Julio.
I keep going back and forth on this.If this team even looked like a stretch to reach the WS I'd be good with them making an aggressive trade and moving minor league talent to do so.
They aren't.
If they can find someone to throw cash at and make minor trades for please do so.
They can't fix what's wrong with this team and the organization with trade deadline moves. They have to decide to get aggressive in the off season and make sure they get off to a fast start and solid first half before those epic trades to fill in that one spot they might be short make sense.
Until then this team will always be same as it ever was....
I just wouldn't trade our top prospect for a 3 month rental. Any 3 month rental. My rebuttals would just be,
The future is irrelevant. IMO there isn’t a single prospect I wouldn’t do a one for one. Obviously the caveat is you have to be a team that can contend for a World Series. One thing I will also say just about the city of Seattle in general is no athlete wants to ever come here, but once they are here they love it. Do you think Castillo would’ve signed that deal as a free agent?
The 2nd is actually why I liked it. An injury, decline in production or anything doesn’t really matter since it’s only a 3 year commitment.
Just thought it’d be a fun convo cause those were two questions that I hadn’t thought of cause we as fans always talk about “selling the farm” not just 1 prospect.
Then we disagree. If they had a Julio in their system then maybe but they don’t have one IMO. But our main disagreement IMO is that I feel the Mariners have a million times better chance of him signing in the off-season if they traded for him.I just wouldn't trade our top prospect for a 3 month rental. Any 3 month rental.
What do you think of a M’s-Cards trade. Was listening to some prospect podcast the other day and 1 of the guys was saying the Mariners and Orioles match up great for trades. He said the Cards need pitching and the M’s need hitting but the hitters that the Cards have to give up don’t matchup with the Mariners needs. But he also either way with Jerry’s philosophy neither are good fits for a mid season trade more of offseason deals.Let the rumors fly...so more
I read the Orioles thing as well. But what legit bat would they give up while in a playoff race? That never made sense to me. I could see them giving up prospects, but is that what we want back? I want proven MLB hitters if we are giving up MLB pitching. If it is Hancock, then maybe so.What do you think of a M’s-Cards trade. I don’t pay attention to the Cardinals at all so was just curious. Yeah the dude said the Orioles deal would be an off-season move. Cause it seems like Woo would be the guy most likely dealt but who is going to take either him or Hancock when neither is going to be able to pitch for a playoff run.I read the Orioles thing as well. As far as the Cards go, I could see Hancock for one of their MLB bats that have minimal experience or O'Neill I guess. I heard Goldschmidt rumored a mont back but he has only one year left and is 35 I believe. I always try to think of teams with good prospects and how those prospects do after they leave that team. Sometimes it is just the organization that makes them what they are and when they leave not so much. Wong is one I think of when I think Cards. I don't know to be honest probably because I don't want to give up pitching for bats the you can just sign bats...hypothetically.
No Julio's, but other that make us a winner and not a lot of them. Even a lesser top prospect is hard to replace, so not my thing unless we are the division leaders and ready to win it all.
As far as having a better chance to re-sign him if he was traded for, I am not big on that. Look at Teoscar. He isn't exactly wanting to stay and Ohtani is going to talk to the team he wants to be with regardless and I just don't know if that is Seattle. If he says it is and is willing to sign a deal now, then heck ya.
