I don't understand telling other teams though. If you have a trade your happy with in place, then take the next 2.5 weeks to see if you can get something better.

Probably because there is no trade in place and the 49ers are hoping to drum up some interest by saying there is a deal in place. Perhaps they hope other teams will now think this is serious and up their own offers.
