If the M's sign him, we don't deal with any adverse draft pick stuff, of course.

I'm pretty sure it works like this. Any team that was to sign Morales before the June 5 draft would lose their first draft pick to us. The only stipulations to that are if it's a top 10 draft pick, which are protected, or if the team didn't sign any draft picks the year before.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, please.

M's did offer him 3/$30M at end of last season and he turned it down.

I had actually forgotten about that. I wonder if that means that Morales just really doesn't want to be here, or if Boras really thought another team would give him the same or more before the season started.

I am not expert on this, but I believe it is the top 14 that are protected and that they changed the rule that even though an unprotected team would lose their 1st round pick we would not get that pick but we get a sandwich pick between 1st and 2nd rounds. That is my understanding but could be wrong.

That is my understanding as well. Pretty sure that's right.

Regarding the 3/30 offer being rejected. Without having details in front of me Boras clients rarely sign in season extensions. I think that contract was offered during the season last year but maybe I am off on that. Also none of the Boras clients took their qualifying offers. I think this is definitely a Boras issue as oppose to a Kendrys Morales issue. He gambled and lost. I think the M's are one of the better fits out there for him.

Per CBS article:

"Now, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik says the team, following the 2013 All-Star break, offered Morales a three-year, $30-million deal, which Morales subsequently turned down. According to Todd Dybas of the Tacoma News-Tribune, Zduriencik disclosed the offer during a recent Q&A with fans. If true, then, yes, Morales would probably like a mulligan on that one considering how the winter unfolded for him."

Though Kendrys Morales could be a perfect fit for the Mariners‘ offensive woes, rival executives say that the team is still showing the same payroll concerns that caused them to largely shut down spending after the signing of Robinson Cano this winter.

Sounds about right. The payroll concerns weren't there when overpaying for a closer that wasn't necessarily needed. However when the idea of adding to an offense that has been bad for 6 years comes up, there are payroll concerns. Mariner logic for ya.

Payroll concerns? For a team under $90 million in total payroll to spend 50%+ of that payroll on two players is criminal, then. If they're not going to spend more on free agents, then they'll have to:

1) develop from within (which is a joke)
2) trade the only commodity we have for the offense we need (which is a terrifying prospect considering that monstrosity that is Z)

It's just very frustrating. Besides the revenue gains that the team has somehow been making every year for a decade, they now have a guaranteed extra $100 million per year coming in for the next 20 years thanks to the acquisition of Root. People slam the Yanks and other big market teams, but at least they invest a big chunk of their revenue back into the team. The millionaires in our front office are obviously content with the bottom line as is, and are making enough to be happy without ever bothering to try to articulate a decent team.

Doesn't that totally go against everything Jack has stated since he became GM? He has always stood by the we don't discuss numbers of offered contracts. I thought it was he who was heated when that reported kept prying him about the numbers he offered Fielder.

It still bothers me they say they have no money yet the 3rd highest expenditure right now is the freaking big screen at $10M. Sorry, still pissed at the no-money bs they put out there. We should be between $130-150M payroll.

It bothers me as well. All semi intelligent fans know the team has money so its pretty much an insult to our intelligence as if we don't understand. At least that's the way I take it.

Looks like Texiera is having a lot of problems staying on the field this year. Seen both Rosental and Heyman link Morales to the Yanks the last few days. That would be a pretty decent fit for him there. Seems like the Yanks or the Rangers are leading candidates with a team like the Angels potentially being a dark horse.

Even with the supposed tight budget, I really thought when Hart went down it would become a more urgent matter to bring him in. However it seems to be only crickets on that front.

that, combined with the fact that he didn't want any part of 3 years / $30 million when the M's offered it.

that speaks loudly and clearly of what he thinks of the time he spent with this ridiculous club

Looks like this story is finally over.

Kendrys Morales reached agreement with the #Twins

Maybe we can work a trade for Willingham now.

I'm not sure about that. If the Twins went out of their way to spend $10m+ on 1 year of Kendrys Morales, I have to imagine that their front office believes they can contend this year, which means they would be unlikely to be sellers. However, there is always the chance that the Twins signed Morales just to try to trade him at the deadline, although that would be pretty odd.

The Twins landing him kinda comes out of nowhere. As far as I knew, the M's, Yankees, Rangers and Brewers were the only teams in contention to be interested. It'll be interesting to see what Minnesota agreed to give him to sign there.
