James Harden fined 5 grand for flopping against Clippers

"Congratulations James Harden, you have become the first player fined by the NBA for flopping this season.

Harden had been warned before this season, then on Saturday against the Clippers the flop above happened. And it was a flop. Harden drove the lane, missed the shot, got his own rebound as he faced the baseline behind the basket, Blake Griffin came up close to defend him and Harden fell like he got a two-hand shove to the back. It worked, he got the call.

The fine is $5,000. As David Stern himself noted last season, that amount is too small to have much of an impact but the owners didn’t want to raise the amount. So don’t expect this to have much impact. Note here that in the game Harden got the call and so long as players think they can influence games they will sell and exaggerate calls. Unless you make the penalty so onerous they have to stop."

Fining is all good & well, but it will have hardly any effect on curtailing flopping. There needs to be an automatic 1 game suspension to go along with any fine for flopping. And scale the fine. The combination of both is how you stop flopping.

I think some of you missed the point about the fine for flopping. You're right that the fine is not enough by it's self to warrant players to stop - but the embarrassment of being called out in front of everyone and being called a cheat - is like getting caught cheating on a spelling test for a kid in seventh grade when everyone else did it the right way.

Carried Houston to the playoffs last year.

Forces double teams so guys like Parsons and Lin can knock down open jumpers.

I saw him play tonight he was trying on the defensive end. He held DeRozan to 6/24 shooting..............

Not many 2 guards play defense in the nba. DeRozan had to get pulled for not playing good defense on Henderson. Harden makes up for it for his ability to get to the line. His ability to score, and his ability to come up with steals and push his team in transition.

Harden defense is still really bad but he makes up for it on the offensive end. Kobe use to be a great defender but now hes just as bad as Harden. Lots of 2 guards don't play defense in the nba.
