Not saying it would happen, but what if the league went aggressive on the Watson suspension - To the tune of 8 games or more.... Again, I think it's unlikely but appearances really matter right now and I know there will be some pressure on the commissioner's office. Anyway, could Baker be talked into leading the Browns for the first half of the season? They play the Panthers, Jets and Falcons during this time. Also have home games against the Steelers, Bengals, Patriots and Chargers. Mayfield could have a 6-2 or 7-1 type record in the final year of a deal. Given Watson's guaranteed money, he'd have to play the back half and next season. Mayfield could be the biggest QB on the market next year. Tons of "ifs" I know.....

I wouldn't say nobody wants to trade for him but like I have said many times...they don't want to trade for him, possibly give up a pick and take his full salary. I believe the Browns were being stubborn for months now and they want the other team to take basically his full salary. It makes sense, why budge when you are in no rush to move him. Now, getting into OTA's there is a report-they are willing to cover half or more of his salary. Again, not surprised. We knew it would come to this if teams didn't bite. Maybe the Browns have to cover 60-75% of his salary but that is still better than cutting him and letting him pick a team to play for.

Money, money, money...it's been about this for months.
agree....though also still reports they wont cover much if any of his salary (might have to do with watson situation).

I think the suspension could be 8 games or more but not sure it would be because of outside pressure. As to your other question, absolutely they could convince Baker to play half the season for them IF that's what the Browns wanted (and they might if they think he's better than Brissett). Thinking the FO and Baker's agent could convince him that might be the best way to increase his value to be traded where he wanted and/or get an extension.

Course it's about money for the Browns, but for the other NFL teams it's not JUST the money. The teams that don't have a ideal QB corp already have a marginal QB or two on the roster. Mayfield isn't taking these teams to the SB, he's not taking these teams to the playoffs, he's not going to be a franchise QB for any of these teams, he's not the future for any of these teams. So there is literally no reason for these teams to trade for Mayfield and that is without considering his salary, that without considering statements like : "We need an adult at QB" the friction between players like OBJ and Mayfield. Mayfield is destined to be a career back up in the NFL and those types are not in short supply and there isn't a trade market for him even if the Browns eat half his salary.

No way. They have Brissett and Mayfield won't lead that team.

Players wouldn't be able to trust him.

The "we need an adult at QB" is among the examples of a possible made up narrative. This FO is made up of adults, so seems like they'd be smart enough not to rip a guy who was still on the team AND they may later want to trade. Seems just as (or more likely) that comment was made as they were asked if they'd consider a rookie at QB for 2022. Of course, that doesn't generate much buzz.

Also the Browns don't trust him and Mayfield has no incentive in helping the Browns get more value in a trade by playing and risking a career ending injury.

Browns going to offer him a new contract? No? Neither is another team until he proves ( by playing for that team) what his worth is. All playing for the Browns does is (potentially) is provide better trade value for the Browns ( although I doubt it would actually get the Browns better trade value) while Mayfield takes on ALL the risks for a team that torpedoed his career by not resigning him to a second contract and selling the farm to replace him.

If I'm Baker I say "Screw the trade, I'll play with a written promise of release upon Watsons return, no ifs, ands, or buts."

and if I'm the Browns and he chose to play hardball (never mind I doubt his agent would advise what you are saying) I'd reply, "you'll play if we tell you to unless you don't want to be paid...or have the year count as an accrued season.

Are you really saying that playing for the Browns and playing well would not entice another team to trade for him and/or offer him a new deal? They torpedoed his career by not agreeing to an extension for which he might not have been worthy (depending what he wanted)? I mean, why, so you could then rip the Browns for extending him? are you just messing with me?

Once again, ya gotta love this forum.

Sorry coach my shoulder isn’t right, think I pull a hamstring, might of sprained my ankle, my back is out. Player do this every season when they don’t want to participate and nothing a team can do about it.

He's already proven he can take a team to the playoffs, and win. But for him to be successful he needs weapons around him. A solid ground game can be a QB's best friend.

There's talent in Cleveland right now. His next situation he might not have that kind of roster talent around him. I think some teams are truly interested in him. But not for the 18m price tag.

I just hope the Browns can find a team interested in him.

Correct. Browns have a very good roster and their offensive system and coaching and Mayfield has played for them for four years and no team has showed any tangible interest in trading for him, a few more games isn't going to change that, and in fact since mayfield would not be in their ( the teams interested in theory) camp learning their system, their playbook, their play calling, establishing chemistry with his team mates it actually reduces his value by a good margin.

Got names of guys who did this since it happens all the time.....also, what player has done this who is trying to prove he is healthy so he can get another contract?
