I think he is vastly overrated, although he talks a great game.
His record as a head coach is 95/81 (540 winning percentage) and in the playoffs 5/4. He did win a SB with Dungy's team.
Definitely need to see his staff before saying one way or the other as sometimes those guys can have the bigger impact than the HC on a season. Also need to see what kind of power he is actually being given in the organization. Are they keeping Reggie McKenzie as heard he would be fired and Gruden would also be handed the GM title. IF that is the case then to me this whole thing will be a huge dumpster fire situation. Can't go from haven't coached in what 10 years to all of a sudden being the Head Coach and GM. Just too much all at once.
I'm also in the category of thinking that Gruden is overrated as a Head Coach. I don't think he is the QB whisperer every one makes him out to be. Rich Gannon is the one QB you can point to and say "see look at the success he had with Gruden." Otherwise it was a list of mediocre QB's that stayed mediocre whether with Gruden or not.
Do you think they go into Pittsburgh and beat them before getting to the SB?
I didn't hear that rumor about giving Gruden GM duties. That wouldn't end well
I had heard that at one point. Not sure how true or false it actually is. Which is again at this point hard to really know one way or the other. A lot does depend on who he surrounds himself with and how much responsibility he is given. To me year one he needs to be Head Coach and that is it. That is plenty for one person especially when they have been out of the field for a while.
Dungys HS beat my HS in the state finals this year. So fuck him.The "Gruden won with Dungy's players" take is something that lazy fans in Minnesota like to use to worship Dungy. He could not be more overrated in this part of the country because he was a Gopher QB and was a Vikings Coordinator. People revere him like he's a combination of Vince Lombardi and Bill Belichick.
In reality, Tony usually ended every season but one with an epic choke.
Gruden did what Dungy was not able to with "Dungy" guys (although Sapp and Brooks were there before Tony got there) what Dungy was not able to.

There is something to say about him being able to help them get over the hump. The question has to be asked though of can he build a championship roster or does he need to go somewhere with an already very established roster? This is why I'm waiting to hear about whether he gets GM duties as well or not. I don't think that is a big strength of his in finding talent.
Horrible hire for the Raiders, or any team for that matter. Maybe for a color coordinator with a network or something. Now his brother, he is some talent!
Going to get a lot of hate but he's no Jeff Fisher.
He has been covering football as an analyst and while being a coach is different......I think he's still up to date on the NFL. I don't think the game has passed him by, he's still a relatively young 54.
Maybe he can convince the OL to block betterI think for the Raiders is a great move, the #1 priority for them is to get Carr back on track, and thats what Gruden does best
And to be fair, he should have won a SB with the Raiders if the league didnt make up a rule on the fly in order to help the Patriots win
