Damn all this talk of the Broncos being the best offensive ever is starting to sound like worship. If Manning wasn't playing against the Seahawks I'd be rooting for him. However all the talk of greatness is getting out of hand, kind of reminds me of the year the Pats had Moss and went undefeated all regular season only to lose in the Super Bowl. It was impressive what they did in the regular season, the ending sorted of ruined it.

As much crap as I give Seahawk fans, I'd be rooting for them if they weren't playing Peyton. A lot of Green Bay / Wisconsin connections and I love the makeup of the team. Unfortunately I'm a Peyton worshiper and I'd love for him to get a second ring in cold weather to counteract all of the unfair criticism he receives.

Statistically I think it's right in the middle of the teams I listed which is every team from 2008-present except for last year, but I agree that holding the best offense of all time to very few points would get them in the discussion to an extent... but the 2000 Ravens, 85 Bears, etc are all still out there. They aren't touching those teams at this point. I still think your team is much more complete than the Broncos and will probably win despite my desire to see Peyton get a second ring. They're also young on defense so they will probably only get better for at least for the next year or two.

"The best" is measured in numbers for the most part. Just look at Denver, they're being called the best offense of all time because of the numbers. But it's tough to judge across history since offenses have broken records every year for the past decade. Now as far as defenses, we will probably never see the great records broken because of the rule changes, but that doesn't mean that better defenses wont come along.

They got the stats but I've never seen anything close to the greatest show on turf. When Warner was on it was like watching someone playing a video game on cheat mode.

This is where I'm at too. I LOOOOOOVE my Hawks, but if they hadn't made it to the Superbowl I'd be cheering for Manning to shut everyone up and get his second ring.

I think if Seattle held the broncos to 3 in the big game, they would become in the conversation of best. Don't think they are the best ever but definitely put them in the conversation.

I don't like relying soley on stats to rate best defenses. Honestly there is so much from the rest of the team that can dictate defensive stats. So I don't care that the Seahawks Defense doesn't rate statistically as one of the top defenses. They would be in the conversation.
The Defense I think is or atleast top 3 for sure, I don't think has the stats or any big post season victories to use as a resume. But I cant think of any defense that could do or be as dominate as the Saints in I think the late 80's could do with zero offense. & I mean zero offense. The defense was on the field all the time as the Saints offense couldn't do shit! So without all the stats & such I know I am in the minority(or maybe I am the only one), but I think if you plug in any of the other defenses in the conversations with the rest of that Saints team. None of those defenses could do as well as that Defense did.

but as far as this question. yes if the Seahawks could hold Manning & Broncos to 3 pts. it would put them in the conversation.

They were fun to watch. I remember a game where the Rams lost their punter/kicker early in the first quarter so they just went for it on every 4th down and almost always converted. Crazy.

That's why I initially only showed modern stats. The Hawks had more turnovers but without them their total yardage would have inflated a lot as well as points scored against them. They're still about average in both with recent #1 defenses which is probably the most important thing. It's not like they have an offense that can't move the ball or commits a lot of turnovers.

That sir, is completely understandable.

An astute observation Sonny. Some of the great afore mentioned defenses did not have to work within the same constraints todays defenses must deal with (which are dramatic!).

The Hawks have more turnovers this year than any of those defenses. The only one even close was the 2010 Steelers.

Turnovers forced:

2013 Seahawks - 39

2011 - Steelers - 15
2010 - Steelers - 35
2008 - Steelers - 29
2007 - Steelers - 25

2009 - Jets - 31

I'm not arguing that the Hawks are the best defense ever, just that they have been very, very good this year. Arguably the best in the past ten years.

Dude, you are on a roll and you make a great point. It doesn't mean Seattle wins this game. It does say a lot about who we are.

Lol, if the Packers were in the Super Bowl I'd be rooting for Peyton to throw 10 interceptions. They're not so I'm rooting for him, but the Hawks are going to have a few more chances in the next 2-3 years.

Not as good as this one, cap and all.

If Denver loses will they be the best team ever to not win it or do the almost undefeated Patriots team hold that title?

Seattle was the first team since the '85 bears to be #1 in all 3 of the major defensive stats: scoring defense, yards, turnovers. You may find recent teams that were better in one or maybe two of those areas, but they were obviously a complete and balanced defense.

No, this does not make them belong in the conversation for 'best of all time'. In fact when it comes to defense there are at least 4-5 you could argue might be best. If Seattle can hold Manning down to season lows and win the game they are at least in the same conversation as the 2002 Ravens or the other recent era defenses, but not in the top 5.

It is a young defense with a lot more to learn and a lot of room for growth.

It wouldn't be Denver by a long shot. They have 3 losses and their defense sucks.

All recent offensive records need an asterisk due to rule changes favoring the offense.

Funny, they are discussing where Seattle ranks against the all time defenses on NFL network right now.

It's called Super Bowl hype. I've already shown you that they're OK when matched against the best defenses of the last 6 years. Great defense but not exactly historic.

I'm not trying to threaten any point of view you may hold. I was just pointing out that they happen to be discussing the exact same topic as this thread right now.

They seem to be agreeing by the way. If Seattle has a big defensive game they will be in that conversation as one of the best ever. Their words, not mine.
